University of Hawaii Kapiolani Community College Languages Linguistics & Literature Department is seeking applications for the Hawaiian lecturer position. Salary: Minimum $1911 per credit hour; subject to lecturer placement.

Schedule:Part Time

Temporary/Permanent: Temporary

Funding: General

Other Conditions: For placement into the lecturer pool beginning Summer/Fall 2025. Subject to availability of funds and actual staffing requirements.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach courses in the assigned subject area through multiple modes of teaching (ie. inperson online hybrid) ;

  2. Prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress;

  3. Assess student learning in terms of course competencies and program learning outcomes;

  4. Submit selfassessment reports based on student and peer evaluations;

  5. Work under the general supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson;

  6. Integrate teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area;

  7. Maintain one office hour per week for each class taught 20 minutes per credit per week);

  8. Classes may be offered Inperson online evenings and/or weekends;

  9. Classes may be offered offsite as when required


Minimum Qualifications:

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian the ability to communicate in English and one of the following:

  1. Masters degree in Hawaiian language;OR

  2. Masters degree in Hawaiian as a Second Language;OR

  3. Masters degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian;OR

  4. Masters degree in Linguistics ESL Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology Hawaiian literature Hawaiian culture or any combination thereof;OR

  5. Bachelors degree in Hawaiian languageAND3 years related work experience;OR

  6. Bachelors degree in Hawaiian language as a Second LanguageAND3 years related work experience;OR

  7. Bachelors degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak HawaiianAND3 years related work experience;OR

  8. Bachelors degree in Linguistics ESL Education or other language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology Hawaiian literature Hawaiian culture or any combination thereofAND3 years of related work experience.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Evidence of experience integrating speaking writing technology and thinking skills in the teaching of the Hawaiian language;

  2. Experience teaching Hawaiian language inperson and online;

  3. Successful teaching at the postsecondary level as substantiated by student and peer assessments;

  4. Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers department chairs and administrators;

  5. Successful use of technology to support all modes of instruction;

  6. Commitment to the mission and values of the community college with its opendoor and multicultural populations;

  7. Evidence of commitment to Kapiolani Community Colleges mission of positioning the college as a leading Native Hawaiian/indigenousserving higher education institution

  8. Ability to initiate execute and complete projects including setting specific objectives and measuring results;

  9. Demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop Hawaiian literature and/or culture courses;

  10. Comprehension or understanding of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.
