Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction and supervision of the director of Ka Waihona A Ke Aloha this position will manage Ka Waihona A Ke Alohas physical and digital mele (Hawaiian Poetic Expression) collections including the organization storage preservation digitization reproduction and dissemination of information.
  • *Develop create edit maintain implement and evaluate Ka Waihona A Ke Alohas projects including but not limited to: Na Mele o Hawaii Nei Ke Welo Mau Nei Ka Papa Mele Kauwela Hookani Manoa La Mele & The Tuahine Troupe.
  • *Digitize transcribe index and catalog audio and video recordings of Hawaiian musical performances and guest lecturers.
  • *Support Ka Waihona A Ke Alohas mele oli and cultural engagements.
  • *Support research endeavors in the enhancement of traditional knowledge of Mele (Hawaiian Poetic Expression) leading to the development of Hawaiian language curriculum materials and other resources.
  • *Respond to research requests and spearhead enhanced accessibility and publicity of the collection with lectures physical displays special showings online digital conversations etc.
  • *Select extract and export data to other software applications.
  • *Implement and regularly review collection management procedures and policies in keeping with best practices and standards for archival and music collections.
  • *Oversee supervise assign and review data collection and data entry
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Hawaiian language Education or related fields and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsabilities for Hawaiian Music research; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.

  • Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of Hawaiian music research as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with Hawaiian music research.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide-ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:

  • Fluency in the Hawaiian language with a practical knowledge of mele.
  • Experience in Hawaiian language curriculum development assessment and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in producing mele and oli in accordance with Hawaiian traditional practices
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Hawaiian music notation using various notation software such as Sibelius MuseScore Finale etc.
  • Experience with database programs for general use and digital archival processing
  • Experience in electronic information resources including online catalogs and services locally-mounted systems and internet-based resources.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects

Desirable Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in managing physical and digital archival resource collections.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in developing mele curriculum performances and lecture series.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting mele research.
  • Experience with mele graphic design and publication software such as Adobe Canva etc.
