The Lead RN provides frontline leadership support as part of the unit management team at a staff level position. The Lead RN supports the Nurse Manager and unit leadership team in their responsibility for the development implementation and evaluation of care provided on the patient care department consistent with the established strategic plan goals and objectives for Patient Care Services. May assume a patient care assignment based on department needs. The Lead RN may serve in an educator role assisting with coordination of department staff development and orientation processes and/or charge role. He/She serves as a clinical resource to other healthcare team members in the designated department.
Responsibilities
- The associate is aware of hospital and department compliance for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud waste and abuse.
- Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.
- Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospitals commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
- Successfully completes hospitalwide orientation annual hospital competencies and department/unit specific competencies.
- For the safety of our patients and coworkers St. Lukes Hospital requires seasonal and job related vaccinations. This is reviewed regularly during periodic health assessments.
- Serves as a resource in the assessment planning implementation and evaluation of nursing care in the clinical department.
- Assists in creating a positive work environment that contributes to safety and positive clinical outcomes. Supports recruitment and retention of staff to assure an adequate workforce for clinical care.
- Assists in orientation for new staff and student interns by serving as a resource and mentor. Serves in a preceptor role as appropriate.
- Demonstrates flexibility and selfdirection in meeting patient and department needs by responding as a team player.
- If serving in a charge RN role evaluates daily staffing needs. Collaborates with the leadership team to facilitate adjustments that meet the department needs.
- Maintains concurrent department records/documentation for staff development and competencies as required.
- Participates in mandatory education and department staff meetings per established guidelines.
- Participates in department and hospital shared governance infrastructure and performance improvement activities.
- Follows up on patient concerns in the absence of the Nurse Manager. Notifies Nurse Manager or appropriate designee of any concerns that have the potential to escalate or lead to Risk Management concerns.
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary to meet the hospitals mission to give the healthcare wed like our loved ones to receive.
Qualifications
Education
- Writes reads comprehends and speaks fluent English.
- Must have successfully completed an accredited nursing program.
- BSN preferred.
Qualifications/Experience
- Must possess current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or compact state.
- Two years of clinical experience in a clinical setting preferred with recognized knowledge and expertise in caring for specific patient populations.
- Ability to participate and/or participate in multidisciplinary teams.
- Maintain current BLS certification.
- Must be able to successfully complete basic computer course through inhospital training; develops and maintains necessary computer skills including Word and Excel.
