Current Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse is required as is a minimum of 5 years of RN experience. A Bachelors of Science in Nursing and chemotherapy certification are both strongly preferred.
Massachusetts General Hospital has an opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse in our Infusion Unit. The oncology practices within the Division of Hematology and Oncology refer adult cancer patients to the Infusion Unit for treatment with and management of toxicities from chemotherapy and biotherapy. Patients are followed throughout the entire trajectory of their illness: diagnosis and treatment rehabilitation longterm followup and when necessary palliative care.
The Infusion Unit has a strong commitment to primary nursing. The Infusion Unit RN is responsible for patient education medication administration symptom management and documentation of toxicities for those patients participating in clinical trials as well as those patients receiving standard regimens. RNs support the organizational mission and the Cancer Center investment in clinical research. In tandem with the Cancer Center Protocol Office and the Research Manager RNs participate in the administration of all phases of clinical trials in which their primary patients may be enrolled.
The Infusion Unit is managed by a Nursing Director who is assisted by two Clinical Nurse Specialists. This team is responsible for establishing standards of care initiating quality improvement projects and setting and supporting the overall tone for patient care.
The unit has 18 beds and 42 chairs. The hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT
The staff nurse is a licensed registered nurse who is responsible for assuring competent compassionate individualized nursing care for specific patients and families including delegation to and supervision of nonprofessional clinical and support staff. The staff nurse is responsible and accountable for the overall nursing care management of a designated group of patients. She/he collaborates with the Nursing Director and members of the Patient Care Team to achieve optimal Patient outcomes. She/he also collaborates with the patient toward meeting the needs and expectations of the patient and family. Staff nurses ensure that care is safe efficient effective timely and meets the cultural spiritual and ethnic needs of each patient and family.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1 Provides competent compassionate patient and familycentered nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of the nursing process and interdisciplinary teamwork.
a) Provides and maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and families.
b) Articulates the professional nursing role to the patient family and health team members.
c) Identifies plans and implements nursing interventions. Facilitates and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for an individual patient or group of patients.
d) Coordinates involvement of the patient family and health team members in patient care including patient/family education teaching and discharge planning.
e) Documents relevant patient data / information.
f) Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other health care team members. Promotes continuity of care through effective handoffs.
g) Helps define standards of excellence for patient care; participates in improvement of patient care services in a costeffective way.
h) Performs specific functions as described in the unit Scope of Service.
i) Provides care appropriate to age group of patients on assigned unit(s) as described in relevant unit Scope of Service.
j) Participates in and contributes to performance improvement activities.
k) Integrates the six aims of performance improvement into care delivery:
(a)Safety no needless death injury pain or suffering for patients or staff.
(b)Effectiveness care and service will be based on best evidence informed by patient values and preferences.

2 Collaborates with other professionals and directs support staff and nonprofessional nursing personnel in maintaining recognized standards.
a) Teaches and directs all nonprofessional nursing personnel for whom she/he is responsible.
b) Participates in orientation of new permanent and temporary staff members.
c) Appropriately utilizes nursing resources.
d) Interprets hospital and departmental policies and procedures to nurses and other health team members.
3 Participates in daily operational activities necessary for safe patient/staff environment.
a) Utilizes resources efficiently to facilitate optimal patient care.
b) Provides input to the Nursing Director regarding unit needs.
c) Participates in unit and departmental committees for formulation of nursing and hospital policies and procedures.
d) Professional Development:
i) Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing education practices.
ii) Within the framework of the nursingScope of Service (NPM 5.0 GuidelinesPatient Care: Statement of Accountability and Scope of Practice)and The Clinical Recognition Program (See guidelines collaborates with nurse manager / nursing director / clinical nurse specialist / nursing practice specialist to identify his/her level of practice and with clinical leadership identifies appropriate learning experiences to enhance their professional development.
iii) Adheres to Department of Nursing requirements for required training.
iv) Identifies specific learning needs and goals and develops a plan to meet them.
v) Contributes to relevant committees professional meetings continuing educational and/or formal academic programs.
