University of Hawaii Kapiolani Community College Language Linguistics & Literature Department is seeking applications for the lecturer position to teach Filipino/Tagalog language courses . Other Conditions:For placement into lecturer pool beginning Fall2025. Subject to availability of funds and actual staffing requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach courses in the assigned subject area;
  2. Prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress;
  3. Assess student learning in terms of course competencies and program learning outcomes;
  4. Submit selfassessment reports based on student and peer evaluations;
  5. Work under the general supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson;
  6. Integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area;
  7. Maintain one office hour per week for each class taught 20 minutes per credit per week);
  8. Classes may be offered online evenings and/or weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Filipino/Tagalog the ability to communicate in English and one of the following:

  1. Masters in Filipino/Tagalog (language or literature)OR

  2. Masters in Filipino/Tagalog as a Second LanguageOR

  3. Masters in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Filipino/TagalogOR

  4. Masters in Linguistics ESL Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology Filipino/Tagalog literature Filipino/Tagalog culture or any combination thereofOR

  5. Bachelors in Filipino/Tagalog (language or literature)AND3 years related work experienceOR

  6. Bachelors in Filipino/Tagalog as a Second LanguageAND3 years related work experienceOR

  7. Bachelors in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Filipino/TagalogAND3 years related work experienceOR

  8. Bachelors in Linguistics ESL Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology Filipino/Tagalog literature Filipino/Tagalog culture or any combination thereofAND3 years related work experience.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Evidence of experience integrating speaking writing technology and thinking skills in the teaching of the Filipino/Tagalog language;

  2. Experience teaching Filipino/Tagalog online;

  3. Successful teaching at the postsecondary level as substantiated by student and peer assessments;

  4. Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers department chairs and administrators;

  5. Successful use of technology to support all modes of instruction;

  6. Commitment to the mission and values of the community college with its opendoor and multicultural populations;

  7. Evidence of commitment to Kapiolani Community Colleges mission of positioning the college as a leading Native Hawaiian/indigenousserving higher education institution

  8. Ability to initiate execute and complete projects including setting specific objectives and measuring results;

  9. Demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop Filipino/Tagalog literature and/or culture courses;

  10. Familiarity with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.
