The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) is an indigenousserving institution with a commitment to becoming a Native Hawaiian place of learning. University of Hawaii is one of a few MSILGUs offering Associate Baccalaureate Masters and Ph.D. STEM degrees as well as postgraduate certificates.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develop an innovative teaching research and extension program in food and agricultural marketing to meet the needs of Hawaii farmers and others involved in the agriculture ecosystem using a systems approach to help sustain economically competitive farming and provide leadership in Hawaiis food and agricultural businesses and export market development.
  2. Teach courses such as Farm and Food Marketing Managerial Accounting Enterprise Management. Develop other relevant food and agrimarketing courses to meet the needs of students. Academic course load of two 2 courses per academic year; thereafter to be determined as per operational needs.
  3. Provide effective Extension teaching to disseminate researchbased information in the form of short talks courses and workshops using multiple methods including inperson websites publications video conferences and other digital/online methods to address clientele needs in food and agribusiness marketing.
  4. Provide leadership and manage the Agribusiness Certificate Program. Coordinate the offering of relevant courses online and in person to students.
  5. Mentor undergraduate students on projects and facilitate experiential learning through internships in food and agrimarketing and advise graduate students on thesis projects.
  6. Collaborate with the GoFarm Hawaii program and provide leadership to extension agents involved in agriculture economics marketing and finance.
  7. Conduct a needs assessment to determine the educational and applied research needs of assigned clientele and make use of extension agents to identify program needs. Couple this assessment with a subsequent evaluation of the effectiveness and impact and refine the content and methods to best meet the needs of the clientele in food and agribusiness marketing.
  8. Publish refereed articles in peerreviewed journals.
  9. Publish extension bulletins web pages videos and social media.
  10. Provide leadership for a statewide extension and applied problemsolving program in food and agricultural marketing and provide strategies and develop tools and resources for small farms and others in the food systems. This includes oneonone consultation with individuals and businesses to respond to marketing challenges.
  11. The incumbent faculty will work with extension agents farmers ranchers processors wholesalers retailers and NGOs across the food and agribusiness sectors in collaboration with faculty across departments with the goal of improving the profitability and sustainability of local agribusinesses by increasing market opportunities for local products.
  12. Opportunities exist for collaboration with faculty in the Shidler College of Business and others involved in related research and extension activities.
  13. Secure extramural funding to carry out independent and collaborative research and extension program
  14. Provide service to the college university profession and community as well as perform other faculty duties as required.
  15. Join appropriate professional organizations and develop a national and international network of colleagues involved in food and agricultural marketing.
  16. Engage with local community organizations to support economic and marketing of Hawaiis food and agricultural products.
  17. Collaboration with other faculty members and meetings with stakeholders may involve traveling to neighboring islands. Meetings may occur after normal working hours and/or weekends at offsite locations.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in Agribusiness Management Applied Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Marketing. A PhD candidate may be considered but all degree requirements must be completed at the time of hire.
  2. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  3. Demonstrated ability as a teacher and demonstrated scholarly achievement.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Preference for an undergraduate degree in farm production (agronomy horticulture etc. and agricultural sciences.
  2. Knowledge of the US food and agribusiness sector with commercial agriculture experience.
  3. Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills for diverse audiences.
  4. Experience in collegelevel teaching (credit and noncredits courses) and nonformal extension outreach methods.
  5. Classroom teaching experience that is studentcentered and experiential and the development and delivery of online distance education courses.
  6. Demonstrated ability to design collegelevel course work.
  7. Demonstrated ability to teach courses in agribusiness management and marketing market research and analysis quantitative methods and working with farm groups or others in the food system.
  8. Demonstrated ability of writing peerreviewed publications on agriculture marketing and business management.
  9. Demonstrated ability to successfully securing competitive extramural funding to support research and outreach programs.
  10. Proven ability to work and/or collaborate with farmers and/or food businesses government agencies and other agricultural related enterprises regarding business practices market opportunities cost of production profitability and upscaling.
  11. Experience and knowledge of agricultural production practices for specialty crops and local markets.
