Job Duties
The Science Museum of Virginia seeks a meticulous Registrar and Collections Specialist to join our Science and Research Content team.
In this dynamic role youll play an integral part in shaping the future of the Northern Virginia Science Museum a satellite location of the Science Museum of Virginia. Youll assist in coordination and project management of all collections sections of the exhibits from sourcing objects and loan processing to the installation of these incredible items.
Your expertise in collections management will play a key role in preserving and documenting the Science Museums diverse permanent and educational collections including natural history specimens geologic materials rail cars aircraft automobiles archival materials and more. As part of the team youll also help enhance exhibits with new objects and oversee the installation monitoring and deinstallation of artifacts for traveling exhibits. Minimum Qualifications
An ideal candidate will have familiarity with Past Perfect Museum Software and a strong understanding of database management practices. They should be wellversed in museum registration processes and the standards set by the American Alliance of Museums. Excellent oral and written communication skills attention to detail and the ability to conduct thorough research are essential. Strong organizational skills are required with the ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality. Candidate must work both independently and collaboratively with the Science Content and Research team and administrative staff. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace as well as experience in researching coordinating and securing collections items from other institutions is required. Project management experience particularly with tools like Asana (or similar applications) is a must. The role also requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds kneel and climb ladders regularly.
Additional Considerations
Demonstrated expertise in museum registrar duties and best practices for collections care. Prior experience in a museum collections archives or curatorial department is a plus.
