Job Description

Department: Office of Civil Rights

Reports to: Director of Accomodations

Location: Central Office

Founded in 1647 Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 49000 students from over one hundred countries over 10000 employees and a $1.5 billion dollar annual budget the BPS is the largest school district in Massachusetts.

The Office of Civil Rights is charged with monitoring and helping to ensure employment and educational equity districtwide. The Office has primary responsibility for investigating reports of possible violations of internal policies regarding biasbased conduct sexual misconduct and disability and religious accommodations from employees students and families.

The Accommodations Specialist will assist the Director of Accommodations as an interactive member to review supporting documentation and requests for accommodations from students and employees for quality continuity consistency and accuracy.

We are seeking a highly skilled energetic committed collaborative individual to join our team.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct interactive dialogues in response to employee requests for disability pregnancyrelated and religious accommodations and student requests for religious accommodations at the direction of the Accommodations Director and subject to complexity of the request
  • Approves and/or negotiates accommodations as written; renegotiates reasonable alternative accommodations or denies restrictions based on lack of supporting documentation or undue hardship.
  • Reviews the essential job functions provided by the Office of Human Resources along with restrictions/limitations provided by the claimant and their treating provider to confirm the claimant can meet the essential functions with or without the accommodation(s) requested.
  • Maintains regular contact with colleagues supervisors health care providers and other key stakeholders regarding progress and status of accommodations
  • The Specialist will coordinate and schedule meetings necessary to make accommodation determinations.
  • Document and provide analysis of accommodation requests and responses
  • Requests and reviews medical information for accommodation requests
  • Provide effective support and information to school administrators central office supervisors and others seeking assistance in addressing accommodation related concerns.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Director of Accommodations or the Senior Legal Director of the Office of Civil Rights
  • Attends and collaborates in weekly intake review team meetings to achieve a thorough review of difficult or complex requests for accommodation and/or works to identify efficiencies and/or solutions to accommodate related concerns.
  • Routinely monitors fluctuating workloads to ensure appropriate priority and timely delivery of services.
  • Participates in professional development to gain additional understanding of the Districts obligations associated with compliance and emerging solutions for equitable access.

Qualifications Required:

  • Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act and the practices and activities covered by employment nondiscrimination requirements of ADA and related state and federal laws.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with demonstrated experience with in project management
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fastpaced environment building strong relationships across the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Able to work independently applying impeccable judgment discretion and integrity.
  • Ability and willingness to reflect and constantly improve on job performance.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continually developing cultural competence with a history of working effectively with people who are members of a wide variety of protected categories and other identities.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Prior work experience in the field of urban public education and/or knowledge of the Boston Public Schools.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a large volume of disability accommodation casework.
  • Advanced degree in Human Resources Education Law Policy Public Administration or other relevant field.
  • Working knowledge of Google and Microsoft Office products including Google Docs Drive Calendar Sheets and Slides and Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Multilingual
  • Background in mediation restorative justice or other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
