The Third Judicial District of the Alaska Court System is accepting applications for a Rural Court Administrator 3 (salary range 18 located in Anchorage. Under general supervision of the Area Court Administrator (ACA) the incumbent will provide training on administrative technical and clerical functions to rural courts in such areas as accounting personnel management customer service case processing and court management.

NOTE: This position requires travel to remote courts to work as a clerk in times of need or to train new staff. Travel may be for several days with little notice. Travel may be by personal vehicle or in small aircraft. Travel is compensated per the ACS travel policy including per diem.

The Position

  • Provide longdistance assistance to court staff;
  • Review new or revised court procedures for applicability to rural court clerical administrative and accounting functions; disseminate new procedures to rural court staff; and prepare memos for proper implementation of policies;
  • Provide input to the training judge on magistrate judges clerical performance for annual evaluations;
  • Review statewide and Third Judicial District procedures to assess compliance with court rules policies and procedures;
  • Work with training teams in developing and revising training materials;
  • Draft recommended changes to procedures revisions to instructional materials and new materials for the ACA;
  • Work with ACA on district projects;
  • Participate in technology committees and assist with committee projects and assignments;
  • Supervise all operations in the smaller rural courts;
  • Attend and assist court administration and other RCAs in planning annual clerks conferences and magistrate judges statewide or regional conferences.


The ideal applicant will possess the following knowledge skills and abilities. Please address these in the required letter of interest.

  1. Experience dealing with situations requiring tact flexibility and good judgment.
  2. Ability and demonstrated experience in successfully training staff and/or processing multiple case types.
  3. Demonstrated ability to organize prioritize and coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  4. Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate information courteously accurately and effectively.
  5. Advanced competency in MS Office software and court management applications (including OnBase Judicial Tools CourtView JuryView CourtSmart TrakMan and BI LaunchPad).
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of ACS policies procedures and rules ability to research and/or interpret complex rules and regulations and ability to identify problems or issues and find solutions.
  7. Ability to travel frequently.
  8. Experience working and/or living in rural Alaska.

This position is in the partially exempt service; the incumbent serves atwill to the hiring authority.


Work Hours

Fulltime court employees are currently scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. The work hours for this position are Monday Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a onehour lunch break.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND four years of technical or professional legal work experience with the Alaska trial or appellate courts.

OR

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND four years of technical or professional legal work experience with a law firm or justice agency.

OR

A bachelors degree from an accredited college AND three years of professional experience training or teaching adults.

OR

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND five years of professional experience training or teaching adults.

OR

Graduation from an accredited law school AND one year of legal work experience with a law firm or justice agency.

NOTE:The required technical or professional legal work experience with the Alaska Court System is met by service such as a Court Case Manager 1 Court Case Manager 2 Courtroom Judicial Assistant Chief Deputy Clerk Clerk of Court or Rural Court Administrator 1 or 2.
