Vehicle Mechanic Lead
Purpose Statement
The job of Vehicle Mechanic Lead is done for the purpose/s of ensuring the availability of district vehicles and grounds equipment in safe operating condition including determining needed repairs and/or replacements; giving direction to other mechanic staff on repairs/troubleshooting; performing required repairs and preventative maintenance; providing written documentation of repairs to meet district state and federal requirements; and providing information to the Transportation Supervisor for evaluation purposes on the effective work habits and skills of other mechanics.

Skills Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple highly complex technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating heavy equipment; operating tools/equipment used in maintenance of vehicles and grounds equipment including mowers tractors graders fork lifts etc.; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: diagnosing and repairing diesel engines airbrakes electrical systems and safety items.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities meetings and/or events; gather collate and/or classify data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; analyze datautilizing defined but different processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of types of jobrelated equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: ability to direct and supervise others on routine and complex tasks and repairs and prioritize and establish flow chart plans for repairs and preventative work scheduling.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the jobs functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organizations services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling some climbing and balancing significant stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10 sitting 20 walking and 70 standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience:Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
