Lead Mechanic - Structural Shop (2nd Shift) Purpose: Colonnas Shipyard is seeking a Lead Mechanic-Structural Shop to support 2nd shift operations in our Shipyard in Norfolk VA. Job Description: - Working with presses floor shaping forming plates shaping from templates marking symbols doors hatches and scuttles rolls presses and blacksmith shop.
- Laying out blueprints and outfitting items.
- Laying out blueprints checking and fitting materials tack welding of various sub-assemblys peculiar to the panel line and shell area such as decks bulkheads side shells.
- Working on ship ways with the erection of units and installation of structural items.
- Installation of structural outfit items doors ladders foundations.
- Display effective sequencing of assembly and fitting.
- Complete work assignments correctly using heating torches in plate heat straightening and shrinkage.
- Complete work adhering to industry codes regulations and specifications.
- Comprehend blueprints sketches and templates.
- Complete processes using Tack Welding techniques.
- Install simple systems without templates and blueprints.
- Complete Bulkhead Riveted and deck inserting.
- Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Persons report and determine if job sites particularly those involving combustible material are safe for personnel and hot work.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Understand and act upon instruction.
- Work independently to complete responsibilities.
Additionally the position will: - Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies including conducting pre-operation inspections and following proper lockout/tagout procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Select and manage appropriate materials tools and equipment for specific tasks ensuring they are in good working order and suitable for the job.
- Maintain accurate records of all work performed including materials used time spent and compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Collaborate with other tradespeople and departments to complete projects within specified timelines.
- Effectively manage multiple projects concurrently demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities successfully.
- Lead department employees and other assigned crew members providing support and training as needed.
Qualifications: - Must have at least seven (7) years of related trade experience.
- Must have a valid driver license.
- Advanced knowledge fabricating and installing brackets angle stiffeners alignment collars liners doublers distortion prevention/correction targeting scribing edge preparations rat holes scallops welding root and cap passes back gauge (air arc) tack welding and torch cutting.
- Must have an advanced hands-on experience with flared flareless and compression fittings taper-thread joints flanged joints slip-on welded sleeve joints socket welded joints butt welded joints Carbon steel stainless steel copper copper-nickel aluminum and thermoplastic
- Must be trained in the NAVSEA Standard Items that are applicable to thefitter trade and demonstrate an advanced understanding of bevels types of backing rings consumable inserts (E/B rings) open roots saddles miters and tolerances.
- Must be able to comprehend blueprints sketches and templates and must be able to calculate and understand units of measure including fractions and decimals.
- Must be self-motivated and able to complete responsibilities with minimal direction and have regular reliable attendance.
Desired Qualifications: - Some previous supervisory/mentoring experience (such as make-up supervisor).
- Prefer previous experience as a welder/fitter.
Security Qualifications: - Must be able to access government facilities and be DBIDS eligible.
- Position requires US Citizenship.
Travel Requirements: - Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements: - Must be able to lift carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders work in extreme temperature environments aboard ships in shipyards under industrial conditions and in confined spaces including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat humidity noise and dirty conditions working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job you may frequently be required to stand walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and required to reach with hands and arms climb and balance stoop squat kneel twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding cutting or working with molten metal.
