Job Description

Postdoctoral Fellow (Paediatric Gastroenterology)

  • Employment Type: Part time 28 hours a week)
  • Duration: 1 Year Fixed Term
  • Remuneration: $88290 base prorated 17 Super leave loading)
  • Location: Kensington NSW.

Why this role matters

The Paediatrics Gastroenterology Research Group operates within the Discipline of Paediatrics School of Clinical Medicine and undertakes a number several research projects with the aim to understand Paediatric Gastroenterological health and disease and to improve the health outcome for children suffering from Paediatric Gastroenterology and related conditions.

The position will lead and coordinate existing and new projects within the Paediatric Gastroenterology Research Group. The position will span biospecimen collection laboratorybased activities and generation and analyses of microbiome metagenomic and omics datasets. Other research activities will include coordination of patient recruitment maintaining and coordinating the logistical aspects of research projects reporting and presenting results at various research meetings preparation of research grants and publications.

Some key skills required:

  • A PhD in biomedical sciences or similar relevant field with a strong focus on gastroenterology
  • Extensive experience in conducting collaborative research projects within a Health environment (ideally the candidate will have experience in conducting research projects within NSW Health)
  • Experience in patient recruitment for paediatrics studies
  • Experience in handling patientderived samples in a clinical research setting
  • Experience in organoid culture particularly intestinal organoids and cell culture techniques.
  • Experience in microbiological culture including anaerobic culture
  • Demonstrated understanding of research methodology with proficiency in molecular and cellular biology laboratory techniques including but not limited to ELISA western blot and PCR.
  • Strong background in data analysis with proficiency in bioinformatics tools statistical software (e.g. R SPSS GraphPad) and techniques for datasets
  • A sound understanding of IBD pathophysiology and the current challenges in developing novel treatments
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to publish scientific research in peerreviewed journals and/or reports for nonexpert stakeholders
  • Prior experience in preparing ethics applications and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Prior experience in grant writing limited to level of expertise
  • Previous clinical trials research experience within the area of gastroenterology and related diseases
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Research Practice Guidelines
