Description

This announcement is specific to the Therapeutic Recreation Office which provides adapted camps and inclusion support services to individuals with a disability. If you are interested in other camp program areas you must apply directly to those positions.

TheDepartment of Parks & Recreation(DPR)Therapeutic Recreation Teamis seeking temporary summer Camp Counselors Directors and Assistant Directors for our adapted Summer Camps and to provide inclusion support for general recreation camps throughout the County.

Staff should expect to work MondayFriday from June 23 August 8. Additional weeks from August 11 August 22 may also be available. Training and planning begins in mid to late May and includes a combination of independent and selfpaced virtual online courses and inperson trainings during 24 weekday evenings and a select Saturdays.



Responsibilities

We are seeking to hire several energetic dedicated and funloving candidates for the following summer camp programs and services:

Inclusion Support:Provides1:1 assistance or lower stafftocamper ratios for campers ages 319 with disabilities at multiple general recreation camps throughout the County. Focusing on enhancing campers skill development encouraging expected behaviors and providingpersonal care while nurturing both independent and group participation in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Adapted Camps:Engages campers ages 621 with disabilities within an adapted camp setting. Facilitates an enjoyable camp atmosphere while providing dedicated assistance in skill development encouraging expected behaviors and attending to personal care needs. Cultivates both independent and group participation among campers in a supportive environment.

SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT I$15.30/Hour

Assists with leading camp program operations activities and camper participation behavior and social inclusion supports.

SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT II$16.32/Hour

Assists with leading activities assist with camp operations and support camper participation behavior and social engagement.

RECREATION ASSISTANT III$19.10/Hour

Assists with directing camp programs and/or assessing camper needs coaching staff on inclusion strategies evaluating activities and modifying camp programs.

RECREATION ASSISTANT IV$23.00/Hour

Directs camp programs develops adaptive structure assess camper needs assigns roles coaches staff and conducts evaluations.

Successful candidates will have good character and integrity effective communication skills reliable transportation ability to complete administrative tasks independently take initiative and work successfully in a team environment.



Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT I

  • Less than a High School Diploma; plus
  • No experience required.

SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT II

  • Less than a High School Diploma; plus
  • Some experienceworking with youth or administering summer/recreation programs.

RECREATION ASSISTANT III

  • High school/GED/Equivalent; plus
  • Some experienceworking with youth or administering recreation programs.

RECREATION ASSISTANT IV

  • High school/GED/Equivalent; plus
  • Considerable experience administering recreation programs including some experience leading/supervising recreation programs.*

*Substitution: Completion of some college coursework may substitute for the experience requirement (Recreation Assistant IV only.

Desirables:Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working with individuals with disabilities;
  • Working in Summer Camp programs or Arlington County Camps;
  • Working with youth teens or young adults in a recreation setting;and/or
  • Working with diverse populations.

Special Requirements

If selected summer staff may be required to:

  • Agree to a criminal background check (for applicants 18 years and older).
  • Provide references which can be included in application
  • Attend all required trainings wear a uniform and ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods of time during the work shift.
  • Be CPR and First Aid Certified as of the first day of camp for the Camp Director or other designated positions.
  • Possess a valid drivers license and successful driving history record check (for applicants 18 years and older).
  • Provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
  • Arlington County requires that all employees have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits.

Additional Information

Work Hours:Camps typically operate from 8:00a.m. 5: can vary up to 40 hours per week and are dependent on camp/camperneeds. In addition precamp trainings during the months of May and June will include evening and weekend hours.
