Job Description
Student WorkerMicrobiology Student Assistant
Purpose/Objective of the Role:
- The Microbiology Student Assistant will help to maintain order and cleanliness in the microbiology laboratory
- Prep areas
- Assist the lab manager with setup for student labs and research projects
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Tasks include setting up and breaking down labs
- Cleaning and sterilizing laboratory glassware
- Preparing variousmedia as needed for culture growth
- Using a pipette aseptically inoculating both agar and broth media
- Gramstaining acidfast staining and identifying microbes using a microscope
Qualifications
Courses completed:
- Introduction to Microbiology (BOMI 125 Chemistry 110 and 111
Skills required:
- Knowledge of basic laboratory safety
- Use of aseptic technique
- Experience inoculating media
- Experience preparing slides and using a microscope to analyze samples
- Knowledge of staining techniques
- Knowledge of the basic shapes of bacteria
Potential Future Career Benefit:
This position will provide the student with the opportunity to develop specific microbiology laboratory techniques while also developing in the student general lab management skills.
The student will work independently and collaboratively to support undergraduate teaching labs and research projects.
