IRVING INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Transportation Routing Specialist

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

FUNDING SOURCE: Local

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

PAY GRADE: Admin 01 230 days)

DEPARTMENT: Transportation

DATE REVISED: March 2025

A Letter of Assurance will be issued for this position.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Routing Specialist will oversee and continually evaluate Transportation department routes and routing software used for supporting daytoday operations utilizing Global Positioning Systems information and data to create safe reliable efficient and economical routing. This position works closely with the Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation and reports to the Transportation Operations Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelors Degree (Preferred) in related field and/or other equivalent experience or background

Required:

  • State of Texas Drivers License
  • Class B CDL or able to obtain within 90days of hire (start) date

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Understanding of Texas Education Agency (TEA) school transportation funding formula and reporting requirements.
  • Proficient map reading skills.
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills.
  • Proficient skills in typing Excel word processing and other computer applications.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and auditable records.

Minimum Experience:

  • Three 3 years experience in related field or equivalent experience or background.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Create and revise bus routes for all aspects of student transportation for Irving ISD to include regular route services special education routes transfer routes afterschool academic routes PreK routes and other tutorial route services.
  • Develop and modify as needed bus routes based on student enrollment and attendance boundaries zones. Create new 2mile and hazardous boundaries stops runs and make adjusts to reflect the changes.
  • Assist dispatchers with assignments of bus drivers bus routes vehicles and substitutes for morning and afternoon shifts.
  • Work directly with the field trip clerk in routing assignments.
  • Coordinate and schedule route selection at the beginning of each school year.
  • Coordinate and schedule summer school routes.
  • Coordinate transportation services for students under the McKinney Vento Homeless Act.
  • Prepare and maintain data for the annual TEA Transportation Route Services Report.
  • Assist the Director of Transportation in any special projects or tasks within the department.
  • Maintain good public relations with drivers school personnel administrators and other districts.
  • Continually stay abreast of emerging technologies and make recommendations for future needs.
  • Develop the appropriate skills to job assignment.
  • Adhere to the Professional Code of Ethics and District policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Computer telephone fax calculator handheld radio and copier.
