POSITION OVERVIEW

Charlotte Country Day School seeks an experienced academic coach to support upper school students in chemistry and/or mathematics. This role is distinct from traditional tutoring. It is not about reteaching content or providing direct answers but rather coaching students to develop independent learning strategies problemsolving skills and metacognitive awareness.

An effective academic coach understands that learning how to learn is just as important as mastering subject content. This role involves working oneonone with students to help them build skills in conceptual understanding study strategies time management test preparation and selfregulation. Coaches must strike a balance between guiding students toward selfsufficiency and providing just enough support to help them succeed.

Successful candidates have experience in science or math education special education instructional coaching or academic strategy support with a strong foundation in high schoollevel chemistry and/or mathematics. Ideal applicants have worked oneonone with students in a coaching role helping them develop conceptual understanding problemsolving skills and independent study strategies rather than simply reteaching content. Candidates should be skilled in scaffolding complex concepts adapting instruction to individual needs and fostering critical thinking. This role is perfect for educators who enjoy mentoring students and guiding them toward academic independence.

POSITION DETAILS & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Parttime hourly position during the school year (up to 30 hours per week) with a flexible schedule that varies based on the schools cycle days.
• Provide academic coaching in chemistry and/or mathematics supporting students in problemsolving conceptual understanding and study strategies.
• Guide students in breaking down complex equations applying problemsolving frameworks and recognizing patterns in math and science.
• Help students develop scientific reasoning data interpretation and analytical thinking skills to strengthen their approach to chemistry coursework.
• Support students in time management organization and effective study habits ensuring they develop skills to work independently.
• Reinforce testtaking strategies error analysis and problem deconstruction to enhance student confidence and academic performance.
• Use a coachingbased approach that encourages critical thinking metacognition and selfregulation rather than direct instruction.
• Collaborate with faculty to support student growth.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

Required:

• A fouryear degree in education chemistry mathematics or a related field.
• Classroom teaching experience OR experience as a learning specialist special educator or instructional coach.
• Strong understanding of executive functioning skills differentiation and scaffolding strategies.

Preferred:

• Demonstrated ability to support student independence through coaching.
• Experience with problembased learning inquirybased instruction or conceptual teaching in math and science.
• Experience working oneonone with students in a structured academic support setting (academic coaching special education differentiated instruction Or tutoring with an executive functioning focus).
• Background in supporting students with ADHD learning disabilities or executive functioning challenges.
