ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION

JOB DESCRIPTION


Position:Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction
Reports to:Superintendent
Terms of Employment:12 months
Pay Grade:ADMIN VII (commensurate with experience plus local supplement)
FLSA Status:Exempt

Nature of Work
Under the direction of the Superintendent the Assistant Superintendent for Academic Services leads and supports
the administration of curriculum development and instructional programs and services in the school system. The
Assistant Superintendent will supervise the implementation of all Curriculum (elementary and secondary) Sudent Services Career and TechnicalEducation Exceptional Children and Student Porgramming. TheAssistant Superintendent provides administrative and strategic leadership support for the districts curriculum andinstruction priorities. They will assume a leadership role on the District Cabinet to assist with longrange strategicplanning; assist with developing systemwide budget plans policies and activities; and performs various duties assigned by the Superintendent.

Education and Experience

  • Masters Degree in education or related field required earned doctorate preferred
  • Five 5 years supervisory/administrative experience required (Experience working with superintendentsexecutive cabinet leaders school board members government agencies or boards nonprofits or community representatives strongly preferred)
  • Elementary and Secondary principal experience preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in instructional technology and digital/blended learning

Certification and Licensure Requirements (if applicable):

Valid North Carolina Professional Educators Certificate in any of the following or:

  • 0011: School Administrator: Superintendent
  • 0012: School Administrator: Principal or
  • 0113: Curriculum Instructional Specialist

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

1. Leads curriculum development and instructional programs and services (PreK12 for the school system

  • Supervises and leads the continuous improvement of the processes and outcomes in the departments of Secondary Education Career and Technical Education Exceptional Childrens program Student Services and Digital Learning Services.
  • Evaluates and continuously improves the effectiveness of the Academic Services by operationalizing the districts strategic and departmentlevel action plans.
  • Facilitates supervises and evaluates the processes of curriculum and instruction staff.
  • Aligns local state and federal budgets to the districts strategic curriculum/instructional priorities.
  • Builds the capacity for instructional leadership in the school leaders of the district through professional learning and curriculum and instructional leadership development.
  • Remains current on North Carolina Department of Public Instruction policies/processes and North Carolina General Assembly legislation that impacts curriculum and instruction

2. Provides leadership in facilitating achievement of the systems mission and goals for teacher professional learning and student achievement.

  • Facilitates the continuous improvement of instructional and curriculum development services.
  • Investigates pursues and administers grants to support curriculum and instructional services throughout the system.
  • Designs processes for collaborating and partnering between the school system state and local agencies and the community.
  • Conducts program evaluation for all curriculum and service areas.
  • Prepare and maintain files records and reports in accordance with local state and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Coaches school improvement planning and department continuous improvement planning processes.
  • Serves as the designated mediator or parent/school personnel in problem solving sessions/concerns as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Represents the school system on interagency committees and task force.
  • Provides input in the selection and assignment of system and school leaders.
  • Evaluates school leaders as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Performs other duties as necessary or requested to improve or enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of programs operations and processes in the system.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Baldrige framework and the systems approach to continuous improvement and organizational management
  • Knowledge of federal state and local laws rules and regulations governing North Carolina public schools.
  • Considerable skill in utilizing technology as a tool for efficiency productivity and curriculum deliveryprofessional development and content creation.
  • Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and the federal role in public education to include exceptional children and 504 programs.
  • Knowledge of school improvement processes.
  • Knowledge of principles procedures and practices of public school administration.
  • Knowledge of personnel and management principles practices and strategies as they related to the administration of student support policy development employee relations and related services.
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements and ethical guidelines for local state and federal rules policies and statutes.
  • Ability to research program documents and narrative materials and to compile reports from research.
  • Ability to review documents for accuracy of information grammar style punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Ability to maintain complex schedules records and files.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to develop and modify work procedures methods and processes to improve efficiency.
  • Ability to type accurately at a moderate rate of speed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with school officials elected officials and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force
and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing walking sitting and speaking
or hearing frequently requires using hands to finger handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires
climbing or balancing stooping kneeling crouching or crawling reaching with hands and arms pushing or pulling
and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging
ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately loudly or
quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information
through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing
written or computer data operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a very quiet location or classroom (e.g.
office).
