Job Description

Program Goals:The mission ofThe Calculus Projectis to use researchsupported strategies to increase the representation and success of Black Hispanic and lowincome students in advanced mathematics. There are seven distinct components that support students yearround and one of these is preteaching in the summer. Somerville Public Schools is in partnership with the Calculus Project Organization to bring the TCP program to our students.

At TCP individuals who thrive here love working with kids are dedicated to their craft embrace feedback and actively seek to build connections. As aDirector you will oversee all staff and students in the program ensuring a cohesive and supportive environment for both learning and growth.

We are searching for a TCP Director who thinks flexibly faces challenges with courage and strives for their personal best. This person will be able to support TCP students to do the same.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree (Masters Degree preferred) with experience in teaching and/or educational administration; at least one year experience managing a program is preferred
  • Ability to supervise and support a team of up to ten staff members and additional community partners
  • Spanish Portuguese or Haitian Creole language proficiency is a plus
  • A deep appreciation for the lived experiences of TCP students; a desire to engage as equals through the Count Forward series a series of conversations discussions and presentations meant to disrupt deficit thinking and amplify the contributions of professionals of color to the U.S. social fabric and the STEM field in particular
  • Experience in a school setting working with students on academic content
  • An ability to provide critical feedback to staff on ways to improve classroom instruction and/or management
  • Ability to communicate with students and families who are potentially from culturally and/or linguistically different backgrounds
  • Ability to multitask and coordinate daily activities including student attendance tuition collection and management and parent communication
  • Organizational skills and ability to follow up and follow through on multiple responsibilities daily

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing a program
  • Spanish Portuguese or Haitian Creole language proficiency is a plus

Responsibilities (commencing in March 2025:

  • Lead recruitment efforts to hire TCP student teachers; coordinate outreach with SHS staff; create flyers
  • Coordinate the hiring process to hire TCP teachers and TCP student teachers from SHS
  • Mange student registration process in collaboration with with the summer leadership team
  • Onboard train and supervise summer program staff
  • Recruit and manage community partners and guest speakers
  • Design summer program schedule including field trips guest speakers and graduation ceremony
  • Conduct regular and daily observations of classrooms instructional practices and classroom/program management practices
  • Informally evaluate TCP Coordinator classroom instructors and student teachers; coach TCP Coordinator and TCP classroom instructors to make improvements
  • Report incidents to summer leadership team and other relevant staff as required; ensure that all required documents are completed as part of the reporting process
  • In collaboration with TCP Coordinator respond to behavior concerns conflicts and crises as they arise
  • Plan daily debriefs with TCP classroom instructors and high school Peer Mentors
  • Be an instructional leader and create a program culture of math exploration w/less focus on finding the correct answer
  • Conduct descriptive data analysis of program impact looking at STAR Enterprise MCAS and pre postassessment results
  • Manage data collection for program effectiveness including student and staff surveys and pre and postassessments
  • Support the development of a program culture that monitors equity data and prioritizes root causes analyses in order to use data effectively
  • Prepare and provide program reports and effectively communicate the results both orally and in writing
  • Monitor program impact and outcomes; make databased changes to the TCP program to improve student outcomes
  • Assume that every TCP student and staff member has a superpower; you can help them find it.

Seasonal/Yearly Employment

Start Date: March 2025

Location:EAST SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Stipend: $6000

Mandatory Orientation and Professional Development Days: Week of June 23 2025

Program Schedule:

July 7 2025 August 1 2025

Monday through Friday

Students: 6hrs/day 9am2pm

Reports to: Assistant Director of OST Programs & CoDirectors of Summer Programs
