Job Description

TITLE: Executive Director of Elementary Schools

LOCATION: Central Office

The Kansas City Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22000 students and 60 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools 28 elementary schools 7 middle schools and 5 college and career academies/high schools we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56 Hispanic 24 African American 9 White and 6 Asian. To serve our students the district employs approximately 4000 employees including more than 1800 teachers.

JOB GOAL: Executive Director of Elementary Schools will support the school district in the full implementation of Diploma and the District Continuous Improvement Plan that results in the achievement of the districts indicators of success. Under little or no direct supervision performs a variety of supervisory and administrative tasks in directing the operation of schools. Executive Director of Elementary Schools should exhibit knowledge and skills in effective leadership strategic planning and change leadership management human resource development and customer service. Further this employee should exhibit dispositions that reflect a valuing of diversity and equity. Executive Director of Elementary Schools is responsible for implementing the districts mission in the assigned schools and improving achievement within those assigned areas. Executive Director of Elementary Schools is accountable for connecting assigned schools with the communities of the assigned district by participating in community organizations community functions and extracurricular activities. Will be expected to be highly visible in the communities of the assigned schools and create operational processes plans and coordinates programs for schools conducts observations of the schools assists and advises principals and evaluates the principals annually. Executive Director of Elementary Schools is also responsible for handling community concerns regarding schools and for working with community agencies to jointly address those concerns. Directly reports to the Deputy Superintendent of Leadership and Learning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervises and evaluates principals; serves as liaison between principals and the Deputy Superintendent of Leadership and Learning; works with principals to resolve schoolbased concerns and problems; assists principals and teachers in striving for maximum student achievement.
  • Will have oversight and/or support of Early Childhood schools.
  • Associates with students teachers principals directors superintendents the Board of Education business leaders consultants and parents receiving suggestions advice and general feedback on the operations of schools; helps ensure an open line of communication across the school system hierarchy bringing insight from all levels to incorporate in policy and decision making.
  • Conducts onsite observations of assigned schools in the system; provides feedback support and suggestions to principals; conducts and documents formal evaluations of principals.
  • Assists principals with decision making and problem solving; plans and develops programs to be implemented across assigned schools; assists in the implementation of district initiatives; monitors the results of programs implemented; develops policies standards and a vision for assigned schools.
  • Attends meetings and participates in KCKPS related activities at the request of the Superintendent and/or Deputy Superintendent of Leadership and Learning; provides input into long range improvement plans; monitors the development and implementation of school improvement plans; stays abreast of directions coming from the Superintendent and/or Deputy Superintendent of Leadership and Learning and initiates the implementation of those directions in the schools.
  • Publicly responds to concerns of the Community regarding schools; coordinates with community agencies to address the problems and needs of schools and their students.
  • Supervises principals including evaluating assigning special duties monitoring attendance and travel reports and granting leave. Recommends hiring and dismissals to Deputy Superintendent of Leadership and Learning and/or Superintendent.
  • Supervises the work of school principals ensuring adherence to established policies procedures and standards; advises and assists subordinates as necessary resolving problems as situations arise. Participates in budget decisions at the district level; oversees expenditures for assigned schools.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources supports the development and implementation of professional practice standards that result in highly effective principals and teachers in every classroom.
  • Support the principals with the implementation of the Growth Model instrument.
  • Develop and facilitate the professional development of principals and teacher leaders in collaboration with the Deputy Superintendent of Leadership and Learning and the Instructional Support Team.
  • Supports summer school and extended learning opportunities in collaboration with the Instructional Support Team.
  • Performs other work duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in Education Administration or related educational field.
  • Earned or working toward District Leadership license in Kansas.
  • Experience as a school principal.
  • Experience interpreting and analyzing school data.
  • Knowledge of elementary and/or secondary curriculum.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success as a leader in school improvement.
  • Demonstrates effective implementation of school improvement and effective instructional strategies.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports general curriculum and learning theories correspondence and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators staff parents students and the public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students peers parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

SALARY: Based on KCKPS Salary Schedule for Administrators

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

REPORT TO: Deputy Superintendent of Leadership and Learning

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the KCKPS Board of Education policy
