Job Description

Position Summary

Brooklyn Park Police Department is looking for passionate highly motivated and teamoriented individuals who have a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people in Brooklyn Park. This position works with the Community Intervention Unit within the Police Department to:

  • Reimagine public safety by interrupting the cycle of community violence through the utilization of violence intervention best practices
  • Create connections and build relationships that engage youth and their families
  • Support internal and external partners to provide promotion prevention and intervention services to ensure the decrease of negative interactions that impact the health and wellbeing of the youth population in Brooklyn Park
  • Identify and connect with vulnerable atrisk youth to prevent reaching a crisis stage that would result in harm to themselves and/or others
  • Eliminate utilizing the juvenile justice system by guiding youth who are experiencing a crisis to an alternative pathway consisting of treatment and care management to promote a healthy and successful lifestyle
  • Work to identify and remove systems of inequity that hinder the growth and promotion of positive connections
The Community Intervention Unit creates assesses and maintains plans and services designed to monitor the progress and needs of the community.

The Community Incident Intervention Specialist position is heavily centered around being a positive presence in the community focused on preventing crime. Successful candidates should be able to identify connect and influence individuals who are at risk of being involved in crime and be motivated to engage the community.

This position is highly mobile in the community with prolonged periods of standing walking and sitting and is very active in engaging community members at some of the most highly trafficked areas of the city during all months of the year.

This position will work under the general supervision of the Community Intervention Manager and is a member of a resultsoriented staff that works together to develop innovative service delivery methods and programs focused on quality partnerships and service to the Brooklyn Park community.

This position needs to be available to work from 3:00 10:00 p.m. and have the availability to attend training during daytime business hours.

NOTE: This is a parttime grantfunded position working 2029 hours per week with funding secured through 12/31/2025. Funding beyond that time cannot be guaranteed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides youth skills awareness and outreach support services to young people in the city of Brooklyn Park by connecting and engaging youth along with their families to provide resources and opportunities in the community that promote successful lifestyles.
  • Trained and capable of providing intervention throughout the communities of Brooklyn Park.
  • Creates and maintains partnership with several communitybased organizations/agencies and participates in the staffing reflection of the evening to address issues understand the needs of the youth attending and follow up with Brooklyn Park Police if needed.
  • Reviews prepares and maintains documentation of shift actions needs and information for review by Community Intervention Manager and team members.
  • Documents a summary of activity at the Brooklyn Park Police department. Summary should include team interactions addressing outreach concerns patterns of behavior noticed and all pertinent information for the next shift.
  • Maintains presence in designated locations and establish a contact each shift to communicate with the Community Intervention Manager or Police Department representative on a shared text/call communication tool to prevent and intervene with youth behavior as needed.
  • Coordinates and provides outreach support for youth assigned by the Community Intervention Manager.
  • Creates a line of communication and trust with businesses residents and community members while in the locations they are working (ex. Walking into stores in a strip mall and introducing themselves as part of an intervention team).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Specialized training in forensics criminal justice business management public administration statistics or closely related field.

Experience
Five 5 years of experience in community intervention work.

Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Ability to use software that may include Microsoft programs.
  • Continuous learning in racial equity diversity inclusion and accessibility space.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets or exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction.

  • Skilled in written oral and interpersonal communication and organization.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations.
  • Fluency in Spanish Hmong Laotian Russian Somali or Vietnamese language(s)
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Prolonged periods of walking standing bending sitting stooping kneeling climbing
  • Office environment; exposure to computer screens; working closely with others frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 10 to 50 pounds regularly/occasionally.
Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check are necessary for this job title. Applicants are required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought.   • A finding of a pending felony charge or a felony charge that resulted in a conviction (regardless of the resulting sentence level).
  • The individual appears to be a fugitive.
  • The individual is subject to an order for protection harassment restraining order or other similar restraining order issued by this state or another state.
  • The individual has an arrest history without disposition within the preceding five years.
  • The individual is someone who has been required to register as a predatory or sexual offender in any state.

Anticipated Work Schedule: Parttime nonexempt nonunion grantfunded position subject to a flexible schedule 2029 hours per week that will include evening and weekend hours. Shifts will begin at approximately 3:00 p.m.

Anticipated Hiring Wage: Pay range is $27.30 35.07 per hour depending on qualifications.
