Position Title: SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR

SUMMARY:
The special education coordinator provides leadership support management and ensures compliance for special programs under IDEA federal grants and state programs while consulting with and training teachers in order to meet school standards. The special education coordinator is the primary liaison between the school and the district. A special education coordinator in an online school must be able to successfully work remotely with students parents and staff by conducting virtual meetings providing both synchronous and asynchronous specialized online instruction and communicating with parents and other staff members about special education services. An unconditional commitment to the success of students is necessary. The willingness to be flexible is required. Our special education coordinator must be computer literate. Patience and an aptitude for technical troubleshooting are required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Oregon Teaching License with Special Education endorsement
- Highly qualified in the content area taught
- Bachelors Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Demonstrated abilities (written and/or oral) to plan classroom instruction around school philosophy goals and learner outcomes.
- Educational training in elementary and/or secondary education.
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice strategies.
- Ability to plan strategies to meet school and district goals.
- Valid drivers license a reliable vehicle and automobile insurance.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Acts as the primary liaison between the school and the district.
- Follows and maintains knowledge of all school policy(ies) and procedures.
- Maintains current information concerning federal state and local guidelines governing federal and state special education programs and ensures compliance.
- Reports the results of needs assessments program plans and evaluations to the Executive Director.
- Maintains all records and forms required by federal and state programs.
- Supervises and assists the licensed and classified instructional staff who work with all programs under IDEA.
- Promotes and participates in the ongoing improvement of the curriculum and total effectiveness of IDEA programs.
- Participates in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings as required.
- Conducts internal audits for all special education programs.
- Interprets the federal and state special education program rules for students parents and community members as needed.
- Supervises preparation of the annual Special Education Census Report and assures timely submission as required by state regulations.
- Prepares federal and state grants for funding as applicable.
- Establishes and maintains open and collaborative communication with colleagues regarding all aspects of IDEA programs.
- Assumes responsibility for the conduct and health of all special education students.
- Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
- Complies with applicable school state local and federal laws rules and regulations.
- Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students staff and community.
- Attends work regularly and is punctual.
- Conducts meetings at a variety of locations.
- Provides specially designed instruction to students both inperson and virtually..
- Has a willingness and ability to work with students in grades K12.
- Has the resources necessary to work virtually (computer phone internet etc).
- Communicates regularly with parents outside normal classroom day by means of newsletters notes phone calls conferences etc.
- Keeps the safety and welfare of students above all other considerations.
- Properly fills out and submits all required paperwork.
- Attends all staff meetings and inservice trainings and provides staff development/training(s) as requested.
- Assumes other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or designee.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises virtual classroom(s).
- Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the staff and students for whom they are responsible.
- Enforces administration policies and rules governing students.
- Instructs and monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials in order to prevent injuries and damage.
- Supervises evaluates and plans assignments for teachers teacher assistants and volunteers.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is continuously required to sit in front of a computer. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. Employees can expect to be driving at least three days a week for home visits meetings conferences and other duties. The position requires the individual to interact with the public and other staff.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge:
- State and Federal laws relating to special education.
- Use of software applications.
- Knowledge of and ability to develop spreadsheets and transfer data within systems.
- Proper English grammar spelling punctuation sentence construction and mathematics.
- Rules regulations procedures functions and policies of the school.
- Word processing email data processing and spreadsheet applications.
Skills and Abilities:
- Have the knowledge and ability to work completely remotely by conducting meetings and instruction virtually via Zoom or Google Hangouts.
- Have a strong working knowledge of the Google Suite of educational tools including Gmail Google Calendar Google Sheets Google Docs and Google Slides.
- Have the ability to quickly learn new digital tools and apps.
- Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Deal with the students families public and staff in a pleasant and courteous manner in person over the phone and in writing.
- Learn the laws rules and procedures related to the positions responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of coursework satisfying the requirement for issuance of a valid Oregon Teaching License with appropriate endorsement in the designated assignment.
Bachelors degree or equivalent from fouryear college or university and at least three years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters degree or equivalent strongly preferred.
Prior successful experience teaching students with varying disabilities required. Prior experience supervising and directing staff in a school setting is preferred.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
A valid Oregon Teaching Certificate is required.
A valid Oregon Administrative License is preferred.

Additional Information:
This is an online position. The majority of work will be done from the home office. However the applicant can expect to spend some days at the main office in Sheridan Oregon and participate inperson at specific professional development activities.
