Itinerant Student Counsellor

New Aiyansh Nisgaa School District No. 92

The Nisgaa School District No. 92 is seeking a fulltime Counsellor to work with students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 with complex counselling needs.

Located in the majestic Nass Valley in Northwestern British Columbia the Nisgaa School District encompasses the traditional treaty territory of the Nisgaa Nation. Role Overview

The successful candidate will work well within the team of Learning Support Teachers with school staff school Principals and the District Principal for Inclusive Education. The candidate will liase with community health professionals as well as collaborate with the Provincial Schools Outreach team. This assignment will include Universal support with Trauma Sensitive and Restorative Practices and Social Thinking Curriculum in addition to Targeted and Intensive supports. The successful candidate will work in all 3 elementary schools as well as the K12 school. The work schedule will be determined in consultation with the District Principal of Inclusive Education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strong commitment to excellence in teaching and demonstrated teaching ability.
  • Comprehensive understanding of curriculum coupled with demonstrated ability to interpret curriculum appropriately to accommodate individual differences.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement a variety of assessment practices to measure and monitor student progress effectively.
  • Strategies to identify learning difficulties early understand obstacles to learning and implement effective intervention to maximize academic success.
  • Knowledge and understanding of traumainformed pedagogy and practice with a focus on conflict resolution; developing social skills; crisis intervention; and advocacy for students.
  • Maintain open communication with students parents teachers and other professionals to ensure a coordinated approach to student support.
  • Provide referrals to outside resources such as mental health services.
  • Develop and implement counseling programs and interventions to address specific student needs.
  • Conduct workshops and presentations on topics such as stress management study skills relationship building.
  • Be an active member of the SD 92 critical incident team
  • Be an active participant in all 4 schools School Based Teams
Qualifications
  • BC Professional Teaching Certificate and a member in good standing with the Teacher Regulation Branch
  • Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology including a supervised counselling practicum.
  • Coursework or training in Social Emotional Assessment in Schools
  • Training and demonstrated ability to provide individual and group counselling to students and to parents
  • Demonstrated ability and successful experience in communicating effectively with teachers parents school administrators and community agencies
  • Training and demonstrated ability to perform Functional Assessments of Behaviour and thorough knowledge of classroom management strategies
  • Demonstrated skill and successful experience in developing instructional and behavioural strategies to assist classroom teachers
  • Demonstrated ability and successful experience in creating Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with social emotional behavioural and/or mental health issues
  • Demonstrated skill and successful experience in helping students with social emotional and learning difficulties function effectively in an integrated school setting
  • Thorough knowledge of the BC Graduation Program Ministry of Education Special Education Model District Programs and community services
  • Clear understanding of Traumainformed Pedagogy Universal Design for Learning and Indigenous wellness philosophy and practice
The successful candidate will have demonstrated:
  • An interest in working collaboratively with the Nisgaa Language and Culture team to implement culturally appropriate wellness programs within schools.
  • An ability to demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to the needs and demands of the profession.
  • A willingness to be involved in professional development with an ongoing commitment to learn and implement new methodologies and strategies.
  • An ability to work collaboratively with students parents and staff to enhance the school as a learning community.
  • Leadership and strategic insight fostering effective school and community relations
  • Expertise in implementing BC Curriculum and researchbased strategies with a focus on SEL integration to enhance student learning
  • Commitment to socialemotional learning student engagement and continuous improvement through data driven accountability systems
  • Experience in administering provincial local and other assessments (ie. Psychoeducational BASC) to inform instructional practices and set district achievement goals
  • Deep respect for diversity with a commitment to reconciliation and integrating Indigenous perspectives particularly Nisgaa culture and history
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills capable of positively influencing behavior and fostering collaborative environments
