Job Summary:

The Police Officer is responsible for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and regulations of the university by performing police and patrol work in accordance with federal state county municipal laws and university regulations. Work may involve personal danger and the use of independent judgment in responding to emergencies. This position may be assigned to day or evening shifts and may be called to work odd hours for special events or activities on campus. Work is frequently performed out of doors in all weather conditions. Work is performed under general supervision of the Police Sergeant and in accordance with established routine and is checked by superior officers through personal inspections review of reports and discussion with employees.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrols campus on foot in police vehicles on a bicycle or other specialized vehicles in order to deter crime direct traffic enforce traffic and parking regulations and provide services or assistance to employees and visitors to campus and to uphold and enforce federal state county municipal laws and university regulations.
  • Investigates disturbances suspicious circumstances traffic incidents or violations of university regulations when prompted by phone calls received by UPD Communication Center through alarms citizens requests or by the officers observations.
  • Talks with individuals to determine cause of disturbances or incidents; takes reports and completes forms to record incidents.
  • Knowledge of the proper use and uploading procedures for body worn cameras (BWC).
  • Directs traffic at university events using barricades traffic cones and flashlights.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing to the police staff employees the general public and other agencies.
  • Maintains full NCIC certification in order to operate the incar Mobile Data Terminal (MDT).
  • Is assigned to a resident hall(s) under the AdoptACop Program. May provide safety and security presentations to students.
  • Actively participates in community oriented policing activities.
  • May be required to send out an emergency alert message warning the campus and surrounding area of an imminent threat. The situation may dictate that the Police Officer has to send out the alert by using his/her cell phone while remaining onscene while the active threat is still ongoing.
  • Oftentimes the Police Officers serve as specialized instructors within the department.
  • Assists the local police department and other agencies if mutual aid is requested or needed.
  • Attends and testifies in municipal circuit district federal juvenile court grand jury and other court proceedings or hearings.
  • Completes police documents such as daily roll call reports vehicle impound forms traffic accident reports warning reports uniform traffic citations permission to search forms advise of rights forms incident/offense reports arrest reports bond forms complaint forms fingerprint cards leave and training request forms employee evaluations property and evidence forms and other UPD required documentation.
  • Participates in training activities including classroom seminar or field training.
  • Ability to qualify with approved firearm as required by department policy and APOSTC standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred law enforcement experience at a municipal county or state police agency.
  • Must be currently certified or eligible to be certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and TrainingCommission within appointment.
  • A valid Alabama drivers license at time of appointment.
  • No felony conviction or convictions for crimes of moral turpitude.
  • Ability to learn radio codes and terminology in order to communicate clearly via twoway radio.
  • Demonstrate knowledge or skills in the accreditation program.

Special Requirements:

Twice annually incumbents may be required to 1 demonstrate skill in the use of firearms to achieve a passing score on the firing range; 2 may be required to complete the physical ability course in the prescribed time limits. Passing or qualifying scores are adopted from the requirements set by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
