The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Wildland Fire Management Division as Fire Prevention Specialist.This position will catalog and develop fire prevention plans and activities with an overarching goal of reducing wildfires due to human causes. This position will work with fire investigation communications community wildfire preparedness policy and other wildfire prevention professionals throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest to identify and implement actions to reduce human caused wildfires.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • This position will work with DNR Regional and Division staff to audit and document fire prevention activities currently being conducted around the state along with any associated plans and defined programs of work related to fire prevention. This includes working with the fire investigation program to identify improvement points in that program.
  • The information collected in the audits will be used to develop recommendations for statewide fire prevention and public use restriction plans.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelors degree in a natural resource related field;
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Two years of experience in wildland fire.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software.

  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.
  • Ability to work with diverse and competing interest groups to accomplish agency program goals ability to plan and prioritize workload to meet work deadlines with minimal direct supervision.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • 90 Office 10 field which includes providing and attending trainings and meetings offsite or collecting samples. When in the field the incumbent must work in uneven unstable footing often in mountainous terrain while working alone. If on a fire assignment work setting includes camping and working in remote dusty and smoky areas.
  • Infrequent travel to field sites training locations and conferences. If on fire assignment travel could be 14 to 21 days in length for the assignment with travel to and from the home unit on both ends.
  • A valid unrestricted drivers license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working as a Wildfire Prevention/Mitigation specialist with any state federal commercial or nonprofit organization.
  • Fire Investigation qualifications.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire policy issues and laws and current agency fire regulation laws and associated agency policy and rules.
