About Us:
The City of Bend Police Department is actively seeking qualified Lateral Officer applicants to join our dynamic team as Police Officers. This selection process will create an eligibility list for future vacancies and were seeking passionate individuals to join our team. Lateral Officer Application Requirements:
To be considered for this position applicants need only submit a complete online application that includes:

Job Highlights for Lateral Officers:

Lateral Opportunities:
For experienced lateral candidates who are certified officers and have successfully completed their previous agencies Field Training program we offer competitive wages and benefits based on your level of police experience. The pay scale matrix and other lateral incentives are outlined below:
  • Pay Step 2: $months of solo officer experience)
  • Pay Step 3: $months of solo officerexperience)
  • Pay Step 4: $months of solo officerexperience)
  • Pay Step 5: $8309 42 or more months of solo officerexperience)
  • Lateral Police Officers may earn up to an additional 10 or 15 premium pay (depending on qualifications through DPSST).
  • For out of state applicants we are experienced in requesting reciprocity for your certifications and can guide you through the process.

Anticipated Hiring Process:
Our hiring process includes multiple phases starting with the submission of a complete application (be sure to attach your resume and cover letter).
  • Review of completed applications: ongoing until May 12 2025.
  • WebBased Interview: scheduled after receiving complete application.
  • InPerson Oral Board Interview: Early June.
  • Oregon Physical Agility Testing: will be scheduled at time of inperson oral board
  • Chiefs Interview: Early June
  • Successful completion of a background investigation psychological testing and a full physical prior to receiving an official offer of employment.
  • This selection process will be used to fill anticipated vacancies. The tentative start date for this selection process is August 12 2025.
Upon completion of each hiring process phase applicants will be notified of their status via email.

National Testing Network Testing:
No need to test before your interview. If you are selected and receive an invitation to an Oral Board the City of Bend Police Department will sponsor your NTN testing at the Bend Police Department. Applicants who hold a fouryear degree or already hold a DPSST Officer certification in Oregon are exempt from this requirement. If you have tested within the past 12 months (April 10 2024 forward) we will honor your scores.

FUNCTIONS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ABILITY TO:
  • Analyze complex situations and develop effective responses that may include law enforcement or the utilization of other community resources.
  • Identify criminal activities and decide upon appropriate response.
  • Evaluate highrisk situations and maintain flexibility; defuse tense situations.
  • Make appropriate decisions as to response; use discretion as required and calmly deal with stressful situations.
  • Apply knowledge obtained through past experiences and exposures along with skills obtained in training sessions in assessing new situations.
  • Apply applicable laws and procedures to specific situations and issue correct citations as applicable.
  • Safely operate a police vehicle in a pursuit situation and use defensive driving techniques.
  • Operate use and maintain a variety of police tools in a safe and effective manner such as police radios various types of weapons and defensive tools handcuffs gas mask speed measuring devices Intoxilyzer flares fire extinguisher fingerprint kit first aid kit and other specialized equipment. Check equipment and tools for condition and performance.
  • Judge when and what type of force is reasonable based on the circumstances.
  • Effectively observe assigned area to identify problems and probable violations of laws.
  • Analyze crime scene requirements and investigation techniques.
  • Collect maintain and transport seized evidence in a safe manner.
  • Provide testimony in a competent manner.
  • Interview/interrogate witnesses and suspects; prepare clear reports and concise diagrams of events; remember names faces and details of incidents.
  • Communicate well both orally and in writing using good grammar and spelling.
  • Prepare clear and accurate reports and incident summaries in a timely manner.
  • Deal with people of diverse cultural backgrounds and personalities in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Access police systems on a computer as needed.
  • Must be able to work various shifts and in inclement weather as assigned.
  • Lift heavy gear and traffic hazards.
  • Develop and maintain physical fitness to subdue suspects and use appropriate physical force move vehicles and carry people.
  • Be flexible and available for rapid response needs and shifting priorities.
  • Keep updated on criminal intelligence criminal/municipal statutes training events and other briefing bulletins.
  • Must be able to be observant and aware while performing multiple tasks.
  • Pass police background check.

Experience and Training:
  • Must be a minimum age of 21 years.
  • Academy Certification: be able to obtain reciprocity or already have law enforcement certification by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
  • Oregon Drivers License upon hire.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check and obtain an Oregon State Police Criminal Justice Information Systems clearance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work in a 24hour environment with varied shifts including weekends and holidays. Duties are primarily performed on patrol in an assigned geographical area where the employee is exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions. When responding to emergencies employee risks physical hazard from violent aggressive and hostile people a variety of weapons noise chemicals bodily secretions sharp objects traffic and drug paraphernalia and crime scenes. Physical exertion is required to climb stairs go over walls run move heavy objects crawl through tight spaces kneel in confined areas and sit for a long period of time during surveillance. Physical effort is required to lift materials equipment and persons exceeding 75 lbs and subdue combative persons.
