This recruitment may be used to fill more than one position. This postingis open until filled. The WHRC is looking to fill several positions. Application review begins immediately and will continue on an ongoing basis until an adequate number or applicants are hired. These seasonal positions will run from late April through early September 2025.
Work schedule is typically FridaySunday but hours will vary based on the scheduled times and dates that live racing is conducted. Hours will range fromweekdayevenings and weekend days plus holidays usually 15 to 20 hours per week.

Work Shift:This is a parttime seasonal position based at the Emerald Downs Racetrack in Auburn Washington. Racing season typically runs from late April to early September. Work schedule and hours will vary based on the scheduled times and dates that live racing is conducted. Hours will range from weekday evenings and weekend days plus holidays usually 15 to 20 hours per week.

As the agency responsible for regulating parimutuel horse racing in Washington State the Washington Horse Racing Commission (WHRC) is committed to maintaining publics confidence in the integrity of the sport. We are seeking individuals interested in working as a veterinarians assistant during live racing at Emerald Downs.

About the Commission
WHRC is comprised of three voting members (a chairperson and two commissioners) appointed by the Governor and four nonvoting exofficio members (two members of the Senate and two members of the House of Representatives). The commission appoints an Executive Secretary and staff to carry out its assigned duties and the daytoday operation of the WHRC. For more information about the agency go to.

Duties

This position is responsible for maintaining the test barn area and assisting in collecting urine samples from the horses selected for testing. The position requires the ability to work weekday nights (Fridays) weekends and holidays plus have the desire to work around race horses in all different types of weather.

Some of what you will enjoy doing includes:

  • Clean and rake test barn area prior to racing each day.
  • Accompany horses selected for testing from the unsaddling area to the test barn to ensure no substances are administered to the horse.
  • Assist with the bathing of horses following racing.
  • Assist with the collection of urine samples.
  • Returning claim tags and head numbers to the appropriate locations

Qualifications

REQURED:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience handling and working around horses.
  • Ability to perform job duties under fastpaced and potentially stressful working conditions.
  • Good communication skills
  • Must be able to walk at a fast pace for a distance of up to 3/8th of a mile.

DESIRED:

  • The ability to work with a diverse group of people including coworkers and stakeholders.
  • Be reliable with a good work ethic able to take direction and instruction.
  • Knowledge of the parimutuel horse racing industry.
