The Mission of the Department of Public Instruction:
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the states public school laws for prekindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instructionis seeking applicants for an Education Program Director I (Working Title: Section Chief) for the Office of Career and Technical Education.

The primary purpose of the Office of Career and Technical Education is to provide statelevel oversight technical assistance and leadership to all Public School Units (PSUs) for the improvement of secondary education programs and for planning implementing and monitoring of state and federally funded Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and services. Services provided include analyzing and interpreting state and federal laws regulating state policies. This position focuses on curriculum acquisition assessment acquisition professional development collaboration with CTSOs and workbased learning.

The Section Chief reports to the Assistant Director for CTE and provides leadership for the staff who develop and support implementation of Computer Science IT and Technology Education K12 standards. The Section Chief will provide visionary leadership to deliver the NC Standard Course of Study for Computer Science Standards and the CTE Course Inventory. The position will also be responsible for supporting the goals and objectives of the NC State Board of Education as well as the Federal Carl D. Perkins Act. This position is expected to provide expertise in current instructional practices in Computer Science IT and Technology Education and will facilitate the planning of professional learning (which may include face to face virtual and/or blended opportunities) to support standards implementation and program support. All responsibilities are related to Career and Technical Education.

This is a field based position.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Demonstrated experience working with the basic principles and/or theories of education.
  • Demonstrated experience planning organizing and/or developing a statewide education program.
  • Demonstrated experience delegating assignments to subordinates and/or evaluating their work.
  • Demonstrated experience developing course outcomes and/or course proficiency scales.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting rules regulations and/or policies.

Management Preferences:
  • Thorough knowledge of the specific subject area assigned.
  • Considerable knowledge of the organization of the present educational system in the state.
  • Some knowledge of administrative techniques and pertinent laws rules and regulations governing the educational system.
  • Demonstrated experience working with current educational trends developments instructional methods and/or techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in acquiring and monitoring computer science curriculum.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Masters degree in education or in the special education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution and four years progressively responsible experience in public education or a Doctoral degree in education or in the special education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressively responsible experience in public education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
