This is a fulltime sworn (Commissioned) position within the Criminal Division of the Island County Sheriffs Office which requires a Civil Service Examination.

All notifications regarding this process will be sent to you by email unless you express a preference otherwise by written notice.Applicant must have a current Peace Officer Certification in the State of Washington or a state with reciprocity recognized by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center (graduation from an approved law enforcement training academy and ability to meet standards prescribed by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission for equivalency as set forth in WAC; successful completion of Field Training Program as a fulltime paid commissioned officer for a City County State Tribal or Federal Agency.
Applicant must also be a First Responder Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Industrial First Aid Certified with a valid CPR endorsement prior to the completion of the one 1 year probationary period.
All applicants must meet minimum qualifications:
Attainment of the minimum age of 21 years. No maximum age requirement.
Possession of or ability to obtain prior to employment a valid Washington State Driver License.
Be a high school graduate or possess GED certification.
Be a United States Citizen who can read and write the English language. (RCW 41.14.100

APPLICATION PROCESS: The application process is designed to determine your eligibility and is part of the Civil Service Examination process.
- Applicants must complete an Island County Application for Employment powered by NEOGOV well upload to it the documents listed below in items 23 4 and 5. Have these documents ready prior to submitting your application so that you are able to upload them as Attachments.
- Applicants must answer the Supplemental Questions.
- Upload to your NEOGOV application a completed Authorization to Release Information.
- Upload to your NEOGOV application a cover letter and a resume and any other documents you feel support your abilities to perform as a patrol deputy.
- Upload to your NEOGOV application a completed Personal History Statement (PHS) PHS Fill in form.If you already have a similar document from a previous position may submit it but you must provide any missing informationcan bein a separate document but it toomust be uploaded to your application.
Your application should contain your complete work history complete educational history including courses of study. If applicable include all military training courses. Copies of certificates from law enforcement training and a basic police academy together with copies of your latest military discharge DD Form 214 if applicable must accompany your application.
Please include a cover letter and resume. Reference letters from current or previous supervisor current or former coworker/peer and personal reference letters should be included with your application packet. Completed application materials including application forms certificates cover letter and resume and reference letters will be evaluated as part of the Civil Service Examination process.

You must satisfactorily pass the Civil Service Examination(s) in order to be placed on the Lateral Entry Eligibility Register.
Incomplete applications will not be considered and you will not be contacted. CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBILITY REGISTER: The names of qualified candidates resulting from continuous examinations shall be entered on the eligible register. Certifications for appointments shall be made in the same manner as from any eligible register. Names of eligibles from successive examinations in the same program shall be entered on the eligible register for the class at the appropriate places as determined by final grades.
CIVIL SERVICE SELECTION PROCESS: Vacancies are filled by the Civil Service rule of five with the top five eligibles forwarded to the appointing authority (Sheriff) for interview and background investigation as vacancies occur. Applicants given a conditional offer of employment are subject to further processes including polygraph examination psychological examination medical examination and background investigation. Must pass a Civil Service examination; AND preemployment examinations including but not limited to a complete background investigation fingerprinting criminal record check polygraph examination a medical examination and a psychological evaluation.
All appointments are subject to successful completion of a one year probationary period as set forth in the Civil Service Rules for Island County Sheriffs Department Section 11.02 or its successor.
