Job Description

The salary for this role is 87038 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance)Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week however we actively support requests for flexible working. 

This role is based at the following site; Culham Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data. 

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Head of Engineering Investment Materials Division you will play a pivotal role in providing the strategic engineering voice for an expanding Materials Division. You will manage the design build installation commissioning and strategy (for maintenance / repair/ expansion) for all Materials Division facilities existing and planned (MRF IIII). You will act as the Design Authority on new engineering in the Division and line manage and develop (in size and quality of delivery) the engineering team in the Division.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Scope and deliver new engineering capability build across the Materials Division:
    • Deliver the (non commercial ie. the HOW rather than WHY) business case content for MRF II and III aligned to the UK Fusion Materials Roadmap and in collaboration with related teams and activities in the Materials Division and further afield. Develop a proton beamline facility proposal for Culham Campus 45m).
    • Align Divisional engineering plans with those of internal and external senior stakeholders to deliver the UKAEA Mission and Goals.
    • Act as policy developer ensuring compliance with Culham site QSHERA guard rails but simultaneously expanding the latter to encompass new site contexts (e.g. University of Durhams NETPARK campus).
    • Report on team progress and activities to UKAEAs ExCo Funder organisations (NNUF Henry Royce Institute EPSRC) and external senior stakeholders.
  • Provide high level inputs to the Materials Divisions annual business planning budget creation people reviews and resource scoping. Drive capitalisation of the engineering assets via regular reporting and engagement with the finance team to ensure timebound conversion of engineering activity to value recognition in the UKAEA P&L for the Division.
  • Create a resilient appropriatelyscaled and inclusive engineering resource in the Division with suitably qualified and experienced personnel.
  • Line manage the senior engineering resources in MRF I II and III delivering performance management by creating an environment where lateral thinking is encouraged productivity is enabled and communication is proactive.
  • Provide technical guidance to extend the teams engineering expertise to establish the Division as the UKs leading facility for experimental research on irradiated materials.
  • Manage the completion of the commissioning (and State 2 conversion where relevant) of all Engineering (instruments ancilliary plant and utilities robotic and other remote handling equipment C&I etc) in MRF I .
  • Leverage expertise (including machining capabilities and the jobcarding system) in other UKAEA units to extend the engineering resource available for MRF IIII engineering delivery.
  • Deliver a working suite of hot cells by the end of 2025 comprising i) the site acceptance tests in Q2 to close out the 9m Hot Cell Extension project and ii) refitting and integration of the original 4 MRF hot cells 5m) in Q34.
  • Manage the launch of MRF II 12m) via creation and oversight of a civilsengineeringscience project team for conversion of J41 over a 36 month timeframe.
  • Manage the launch of MRF III 12m) via creation and oversight of a civilsengineeringscience project team for the Irradiated Magnet Materials research facility at Uni Durham over.
  • Create management systems and implement Systems Engineering tools and processes to deliver transparent governance and legislative compliance for the Divisions engineering resource and oversee machine certification work where relevant aligned with the Office of the Chief Engineer at UKAEA.

Qualifications :

Essential:

  • Degree in engineering discipline with a proven track record of delivering in research environments preferably Chartered Engineer skilled enough to be able to be creative in combining system engineering implementation and to lead design activities across several engineering disciplines (mechanical electrical electronic)
  • Experience in requirements for CE/UKCA certification (preferably with machine certification qualification)
  • Experience in large team management
  • Experience in project management Ability to estimate resource requirements and focus on delivery to an agreed timeline clear understanding of and adherence to scope
  • Experience of high hazard plant in a safety management or technical management capacity
  • Ability to demonstrate strategic planning and leadership to support business goals
  • Good oral and written communication ability
  • Ability to deal with uncertainty Flexibility in responding to unforeseen changes with a view to minimising impact on technical delivery

Desirable:

  • Experience in a hotcell facilities or nuclear engineering
