Description

Located in Fremont OhioProMedica Memorial Hospitalhas served the citizens of Sandusky County and the adjacent communities since 1918. In fact our hospital was built with funds raised by members of our community on land donated by the family of former United States President Rutherford B. Hayes.

POSITION SUMMARY

Assistand provide aid in exposure hemostasis closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

proficiency in proper scrub technique and the handling ofinstruments supplies and equipment for the assigned cases followingdepartment policies and procedures and job description. Demonstrates agerelated competency in the scrub role for the following age populations: infantPediatric adolescent adult geriatric.

preference lists indepth knowledge of anatomy and physiologydepartmental policies and procedures and the patients age related needs inpreparing for and carrying out case responsibilities. Shares responsibilitieswith the clinical nurse for keeping preference cards current.

integrity of the sterile field by utilizing aseptic techniques andobservation of the surgical team. Promptly addresses any observed breaksin sterile technique. Maintains proper supply of instruments setups andsupplies specific to patients age and physician preferences. Takes selfinitiativeto assist other personnel with procedures.

maintain current certification and submit proof of current certification tothe manager annually (obtaining the required amount of continuing educationunits or contact hours as set forth by their professional organization at thepresent time.

in the preceptorship of staff to the first assisting role. Acts as arole model and resource person for staff and students. Provides guidanceand leadership to new employees and students.

maintain minimum number of hours in the first assisting role as definedby unit Director. Evidence of such hours to be maintained biannually inemployee file. Completes First Assist competency annually which includesconfirmation from a surgeon and a CRNFA through multiple direct observationsof the first assisting role.

at an advanced level of practice by competently and consistentlyperforming in an expanded scrub and first assist role in one of the followingspecialties: neuro vascular ortho eye cardiovascular and advanced general.

first assistant shall assist the surgeon in the performance of a safe operationand shall function only under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Performsassisting duties including but not limited to: handling tissue providing exposureusing instruments suturing providing hemostasis closing tissue and skin.

understanding of departmental goals and objectives and works withcoworkers and management to obtain goals and objectives.

other duties as directed.



Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited Certified Surgical Technologist program.

2. Must have a least three 3 years experience in the operating room and have passed the certification exam.

3. Must maintain current certification through acquisition of mandatory contact hours of continuing education as approved by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).

4. Must be successful incompletion of a course in preparing the Surgical Technologist as a First Assistant in surgery. This course shall meet the recommended education standards for first assisting established by the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and shall include clinical practice under the direction of a registered nurse first assistant or licensed surgeon.

5. Must be able to move about and between workstations.

6. Must be able to understand directions communicate and respond to inquiries: requires effective interpersonal skills.

7. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.

8. Must be able to lift medium materials Nonmaterial handling of: continuous standing walking bending stooping and reaching; frequent pushing pulling and squatting. Occasional sitting stairs and kneeling.
