Job Description

About the Position

This is an intradepartmental recruitment only open to current Montgomery County Police Department Police Officer III and Master Police Officer.

This Promotional Bulletin is being distributed to outline the requirements for promotion and the examination procedure for the ranks of Master Police Officer and Police Sergeant. This document is not to be considered exclusively but rather is issued in conjunction with and in acknowledgment of existing County Laws Personnel Regulations Administrative Procedures Departmental Directives and any other controlling documents. To participate in the 2025 promotional examinations for these ranks candidates must submit apply online with a resume submission for consideration.


What Youll Be Doing

For the Rank of Master Police Officer:

The promotional examination for the rank of Master Police Officer will be a written multiplechoice examination. The written examination is tentatively scheduled for Sunday May 4 2025at 8:00 a.m. location to be announced. Each candidate will receive a notification to report for the examination process giving the location date and time scheduled. No makeup dates are planned for this examination.


For the Rank of Police Sergeant:

The promotional examination for the rank of Police Sergeant will be a twophase process: Phase I written multiplechoice examination; Phase II assessment component. All candidates will participate in the written multiplechoice examination. Only the top ranked 50 candidates with a score of 70 or better on the written multiplechoice examination will be eligible to compete in the second phase of the examination process which shall consist of assessment center style exercises.


The written multiplechoice examination is tentatively scheduled for Sunday May 4 2025 at 8:00 a.m. location to be announced. Each candidate will receive a notification to report for the written multiplechoice examination giving the location date and time scheduled. The assessment center component is tentatively scheduled to be held June. Those candidates who qualify to participate in the assessment will be notified of the locations dates and times of their sessions. It is tentatively planned for candidates to be offered the opportunity to complete the written portion of the assessment component utilizing Word on a personal computer or paper and pencil. No makeup dates are planned for this examination.

Minimum Qualifications

In order to be eligible to take the promotional examination a candidate must meet the following experience and education requirements by the closing date of April 21 2025.


For the Rank of Master Police Officer

InGrade Requirement: Applicants must be a Montgomery County Police Officer III.

NOTE: Effective January 1 1998 applicants must be a Montgomery County Police Officer III and must have one 1 year sworn experience as a Police Officer III byApril 21 2025.

Education: Satisfactory completion of an Associate of Arts degree or equivalent by April 21 2025.

Equivalency: Education may not be substituted for InGrade Requirement nor may experience be substituted for required education.

Other: Satisfactory completion of required Departmental training programs. Must have personal integrity pay attention to details be emotionally stable and physically fit to perform all of the duties of the Master Police Officer class of work.

License:Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class C (or equivalent) drivers license from the applicants state of residence.


For the Rank of Police Sergeant

InGrade Requirement: Must be a Montgomery County Master Police Officer or a Police Officer III with two 2 years of time in grade by April 21 2025.

Education: Possession of a Bachelors Degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university byApril 21 2025.

Equivalency: Education may not be substituted for InGrade Requirement nor may experience be substituted for required education.

Other: Satisfactory completion of required Department training classes. Must have personal integrity pay attention to details be emotionally stable and physically fit to perform all of the duties of the Police Sergeant class of work

License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class C (or equivalent) drivers license from the applicants state of residence
