Job Description

General Purpose

The Senior Station Operator is responsible for all operational local functions at the McNeil Generating Station including; monitoring all valving instrumentation and equipment operation. This position also assists maintenance staff at McNeil Generating Station.

Remote Tier 1:Zero 0 days remote/week

Please note Burlington Electric is seeking to hire one person to join the Station Operator crew. In addition to this posting we will consider a Station Operator to fill this opening.

Essential Job Functions

  • Test troubleshoot maintain repair inspect monitor and operate Station equipment including 480V electrical equipment once qualified to ensure proper operating conditions.
  • Performs routine water purification duties; including monitoring and maintaining proper chemical tank levels.
  • Works with Shift Supervisor to ensure the Station is running in a safe efficient and environmentally sound manner.
  • Performs manual operation of systems for startup and shutdown of Station.
  • Monitors and maintains lubrication systems on all plant equipment.
  • Records Station operational parameters.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of unusual occurrences or operating problems.
  • Keeps abreast and adheres to all Station safety policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for Shift Supervisor responsibilities as needed or directed including; operation of Control Room equipment that controls the Winooski One Hydro Generating Station and McNeil Generating Station high pressure boiler steam turbine main generator and all plant systems while burning wood oil or gas.
  • Assists in training shift personnel as needed.
  • Operates a variety of machinery and heavy equipment including a frontend loader and dump truck.
  • Assists the Station Operator Auxiliary Operator and Yard worker as needed.
  • Responsible for cleaning assigned area.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on station equipment as needed.
  • Cover the shift of a Station Operator Auxiliary Operator or YardWorker as needed.
  • Assist the maintenance staff as needed.
NonEssential Job Functions:
  • Unloads railcars
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support City diversity equity and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess a technical degree or a license for boiler/turbine operations.
  • Additional experience in combustion process lubrication electricity chemistry steam cycle valve types and generating units may be substituted for a technical degree requirement on a twoforone year basis.
  • Must possess a certificate in boiler/turbine operation for employees hired after September 1 2018.
  • Must attend a boiler/turbine operation training every five years to maintain the Senior Operator level.
  • Must have a minimum of five years experience as a Station Operator. Working knowledge of the combustion process lubrication electricity chemistry steam cycle valve types and generating units required.
  • Knowledge of plant circuit breaker operations andprevious experience at McNeil Station is preferred.
  • Ability to work in close proximity to electrical voltages up to 480V.
  • Must be qualified on BED 480V Fuse Changeout McNeil Qualification.
  • Must possess the skills and techniques necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from other parts of electric equipment.
  • Must be proficient in the proper use of the special precautionary techniques personal protective equipment insulating and shielding materials and insulated tools for working on or near exposed energized parts of electric equipment.
  • Must be proficient in recognition of system Arc Flash requirements.
  • Must attend BED sponsored annual Electric Safe Work Practices training.
  • Must be able to give and follow complex written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be adaptable to a rotating 12hour shift schedule.
  • Must be in good physical condition.
  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Must have the ability to interact harmoniously with coworkers.
  • Ability to pass a Pulmonary Function Test preferred.
  • Ability to participate in various training including CST CPR First Aid and all required training.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed consistent with the provisions of the BED/IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement.
