The Citadel The Military College of South Carolina located in Charleston South Carolina invites applications for a TenureTrack position in Cell Biology at the level of Assistant Professor beginning August 2025.
The Citadel is a fully accredited public comprehensive coeducational college with a student body of about 2300 undergraduate students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Another 1000 students attend The Citadel Graduate College a civilian evening and online program that offers graduate and professional degrees in some departments. The biology department offers a BS degree in biology and various minors such as biochemistry and molecular biology.
Charleston is a culturally rich coastal city providing numerous opportunities for boating biking surfing and running including the nationally popular annual run over the Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge. The area hosts numerous historic sites and buildings the nations first natural history museum Fort Sumter and other historic military installations a highly acclaimed symphony a vibrant culinary scene and professional sports teams including the River Dogs minor league baseball team and the South Carolina Stingrays professional hockey team. It is a great place to live and work.
Position Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities primarily include undergraduate instruction in Cell Biology and Introductory Biology and additional course experience within the individuals area of expertise (e.g. Developmental Biology Immunology etc. is desirable. The faculty member will also be expected to teach in the colleges general education curriculum. A normal teaching load is twelve credit hours per semester. Other responsibilities include mentoring students in research contributing to curriculum development and revision participating in faculty governance and performing service to the institution.
The candidate is also expected to achieve and maintain scholarly productivity consistent with departmental and collegewide policies for tenure and promotion. There are opportunities for collaborative research with local state and federal agencies; including the Medical University of South Carolina NOAA and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Citadel faculty may also be nominated to serve as graduate research faculty for the College of Charlestons MS programs in Marine Biology and Environmental and Sustainability Studies. The Citadel supports faculty scholarship and professional development through internal funding for research development and travel. Research laboratory space and modest startup funds are available.
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should possess a doctoral degree in cell biology or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior teaching experience and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate instruction along with evidence of mentoring and engaging undergraduates in research is preferred.
