Job Description
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license and CPR certification. This individual should demonstrate strong leadership abilities including the capacity to guide and support school nurses by providing inservice training and professional development. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential for building positive relationships with administrators staff parents students and community partners. The Lead School Nurse must be capable of preparing clear and concise reports and effectively utilizing relevant computer systems. Flexibility is important as the role requires collaboration in various situations and occasional travel to multiple school locations as needed.
DESCRIPTION
The Lead School Nurse acts in a lead role to school nurses; assists with developing division standardized school health procedures; provides technical assistance and consultation to school nurses; develops/conducts inservice training to school nurses regarding specialized techniques and procedures; assists school nurses as needed in developing/conducting training for school staff; provides support to schools in the absence of their school nurse; implements division wide school health programs and initiatives as assigned. In addition the Lead School Nurse will work collaboratively with the school principals and central office administration to observe and monitor school nurses to ensure that regulations and appropriate mandated practices are followed.
GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)
- Assists with recruiting for vacant school nurse positions and substitute nurses
- Develops/conducts inservice training for school nurses in coordination with the Supervisor of Pupil Personnel including orientation for new hires and substitute nurses
- Serves as substitute nurse performing all duties of a school nurse in the absence of the assigned school nurse
- Assists with developing division standardized school health procedures to insure consistency across the division in clinic operations
- Assists with data collection and submission for all mandated reports (i.e. state reports; health department reports; etc.
- Observe and evaluate division wide nurses and ensure that regulations and appropriate mandated practices are followed
- Provides consultation and technical assistance to all division school nurses as needed
- Implements in coordination with division school nurses division wide school health programs and initiatives as assigned
- Collaborates with school leaders to address concerns related to nursing practices as reported by staff students or parents
- Conducts routine reviews of clinic/health records and nursing protocols
- Oversight of division Exposure Control Plan per OSHA
- Supervision of all division school nurses
- Oversight of division immunization tracking supporting school nurses with data entry and generating reports
- Point of contact for annual division clinic supply order and equipment needs
- Assists in conducting division wide school nurse meetings as needed throughout the school year in coordination with the Supervisor of Pupil Personnel
- Provides training on a variety of health related topics as assigned for the purpose of acting as a resource to students teachers and other school personnel
- Assists with VDH communicable disease reporting and related school division protocols
- Oversight of all medication training and bloodborne pathogens training for school division staff in coordination with building nurses
- Develops the intersession work schedule for school nurses
- Responsible for care coordination of student needs during intersessions
- Oversight of Medicaid reimbursement process for nurses including the development of care plans
- Conducts student vision and hearing screenings
- Supports public health initiatives in the schools and other responsibilities as assigned
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Pupil Personnel and building principals in accordance with the policies and regulations adopted by the school division. This position has direct employee supervisory responsibility over division nurses as well as the responsibility for inservice training consultation oversight and technical support for division school nurses.
WORK CONDITIONS
This position typically operates within the school clinics which may include an area for nursing assessments and treatments. The Lead Nurse may also travel between classrooms or other areas of the school to provide care or conduct health screenings. The work environment may involve exposure to infectious diseases bodily fluids and medical emergencies. The Lead Nurse may need to lift or move students who require assistance as well as carry medical supplies and equipment. Additionally the Lead Nurse may be required to attend meetings training sessions and school events as part of their responsibilities.
