Your role:

Are you a dynamic leader looking to be part of a worldclass global organization providing a critical service to the worlds largest financial institutions

As the Vice President (VP) Legal you play a pivotal role in overseeing and creatively collaborating with the many lawyers at Global Relay who support all legal operations and services in our rapidly growing offices around the world. You are comfortable navigating legal risks managing disputes providing legal and regulatory guidance in a variety of areas applicable to the organization participating in key contract negotiations and overseeing legal operations internationally.

Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) you will assist in strategic leadership of Global Relays Legal team including development of the Legal team strategy to ensure Global Relays numerous teams are supported effectively.

As VP of Legal you will be immersing yourself in the hottest tech trends and issues of the day. Big data. Artificial Intelligence. Surveillance and cyber security. Privacy protection. Data sovereignty. And thats just for starters.

You will be involved in every major aspect of the business from customers to vendors to the worlds largest technology companies we partner with. You will deal with issues related to compliance archiving data protection eDiscovery and business continuity of highly regulated industries.

Your responsibilities:

  • Oversee recruitment promotions performance reviews and improvement plans for the Legal team in partnership with HR
  • Lead and develop the team through performance management mentoring and strategic coaching to drive individual and team excellence
  • Keep the CLO informed of material legal compliance and operational matters identified during daytoday management of the Legal Team
  • Review negotiate and draft complex customer agreements policies partner agreements vendor agreements and related business or legal negotiations and provide oversight and support to other Legal team members and serve as an escalation point on such matters to help advance the business forward
  • Provide businessminded and practical legal advice on highpriority matters
  • Advise various internal teams on legal compliance and business risk issues including privacy data residency matters compliance policies & rules for various industries intellectual property employment HR and human rights issues
  • Provide legal support for the business teams including in relation to customer retention renewals and other related legal/accounting issues including managing and resolving disputes and complaints with high value customers
  • Provide business support in the development of Global Relays sales marketing and business development strategies new gotomarket strategies product design deployment and positioning to help maximize revenues of the business team
  • Provide operational support with Global Relays internal policies communications training and education on Global Relay services and general governance
  • Respond to litigation and threats of litigation warrants subpoenas and other legal process resolving internally where possible and otherwise managing external counsel to respond to or initiate and advance legal claims
  • Manage Global Relays governance compliance privacy risk management and data sovereignty obligations
  • Collaborate with the Data Services team and Global Relays technical design teams to provide guidance on the design of eDiscovery review features and other similar legal workflows for Global Relays product/service offerings

About you:

  • Qualified to practice law in British Columbia Canada with a minimum of 12 years of relevant legal experience
  • Experience developing and coaching a legal team in a dynamic business environment
  • Experience managing external counsel
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills
  • Effective analytical skills to balance pragmatic problem solving with risk management
  • Effective communication skills to explain and advocate Global Relays position
  • SaaS licensing telecommunications and IP experience is essential
  • Privacy and data protection experience is essential
  • Inhouse and business experience is essential
  • Intellectual curiosity passion and integrity
  • Strong work ethic with matching sense of humor

Compensation:

Global Relay advertises the pay range for this role in compliance with British Columbias pay transparency laws. Individual pay rates are determined by evaluating factors such as expertise skills education and professional background.

The range below reflects the expected annual base salary which is only one element of our comprehensive total rewards package designed to reflect our company pay philosophy culture and values. We aim to foster an inspiring work environment and support employees worklife rhythms. We provide a comprehensive extended health benefits program including virtual healthcare and a wellness allowance. Employees also receive annual allotted vacation days which increase based on tenure. British Columbia Base Salary Range:
$225000$295000 CAD
