Our Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) meticulously reviews and approves these activities to uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance.

Our Biosafety Program plays a crucial role in this mission by providing comprehensive training and support to faculty and staff ensuring they meet all regulatory requirements associated with IBCreviewed research. Additionally our Biosafety Occupational Health Program (BOHP) is integral to our commitment to a safe and healthy work environment. BOHPs mission is to offer the best possible information and access to competent occupational medical services for all individuals potentially exposed to hazardous biological agents during their activities at Texas A&M institutions.

What We Want

The Institutional Biosafety Program Coordinator under general supervision is responsible for serving as a contact for inquiries related to compliance reviews; assisting faculty with the preparation of IBC submissions that comport with regulatory requirements and guidelines for activities involving biohazardous materials; review and development of program SOPs and program reporting documents; responding to questions and concerns from investigators administrators and the IBC; and working closely with the Senior Institutional Biosafety Program Coordinators Associate Biosafety Officers (ABSO) and Biosafety Occupational Health Program (BOHP) staff.

What You Need To Know

Salary is commensurate with experience starting salary $75000.00.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Three years of related experience. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of relevant education beyond the minimum education requirement

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of federal and institutional laws regulations and procedures pertaining to the use of biohazardous materials in research as described in the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving

  • Recombinant and Synthetic DNA Molecules Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories

  • (BMBL) and the Select Agent Regulations 42 CFR Part 73 7 CFR Part 331 9 CFR Part 121.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Detail oriented and able to deliver quality professional products in a timely manner.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Ability to use tact diplomacy and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of word processing spreadsheet and database applications as well as ability to learn new programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 years of related experience including at least one year of experience involving the application of Federal or State biosafety related regulatory standards.

  • Two years experience with biosafety compliance in the academic setting.

  • Certified Professional Biosafety Compliance Administrator (CPBCA)3

  • Understanding of institutional regulations and procedures pertaining to the use of biohazardous materials in research as described in Texas A&M System regulation 15.99.06.

Responsibilities

  • Program Coordination Coordinates administrative processes of the IBC. Monitors committee email inbox and coordinates with other offices and programs. Coordinates IBC meetings by preparing review materials reports and other meeting related documents. Reviews and prepares correspondence meeting agendas and meeting minutes. Assigns reviewers and monitors submission status throughout the review and approval process and provides status updates to the Institutional Biosafety Program Manager. Works with supervisor in the development or update of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and office processes. Provides effective communication and timely responses.

  • Protocol Compliance Consults and advises faculty staff and students in the preparation of protocols based on knowledge of guidelines and Federal regulations for biosafety in research teaching and testing. Provides preliminary review of submitted protocols to ensure applications are complete and accurate and provide recommendations to supervisor and feedback to customers. Provides effective communication and timely responses related to submissions and compliance reviews. Reviews IBC submissions for export control requirements and assigns ad hoc reviews if necessary. Reviews training records of personnel listed on IBC permits and assigns trainings as appropriate.

  • Program Support Maintains paper and electronic office files including programmatic SOPs and ensures timely review of documents. Reviews and maintains a current understanding of all federal regulations as well as the institutional policies for activities involving biohazardous materials. Monitors project timelines and identifies issues. Makes recommendations for process improvements administrative changes or new initiatives. Provides monthly and quarterly reports for submissions inspections outlying issues with review times and other Office of Biosafety activities.

  • Training and Outreach Participates in the development of presentations guidance documents and other training materials. Develops and writes content for the Office of Biosafety monthly quarterly and annually. Conducts biosafetyrelated training and orientation for students faculty and staff. May train other staff and/or student workers on duties and SOPs. Regularly reviews content on the biosafety website to ensure that the resources available to researchers are current accurate and relevant. Coordinates travel arrangements and prepares itineraries. Plans and coordinates meetings seminars and other special events.
