The City of Falls Church is recruiting for a fulltime Public Meetings Assistant who is eager to learn passionate about public service and excited to be part of the local government process. The position works from the City Clerks office to facilitate the smooth operation of public meetings provide public access to the output from those meetings and assists the City Clerks office with general operations. This position helps to ensure that the Falls Church community can engage with their governing body. ;

The City is an independent city six miles from the nations capital. It is small in area 2.2 square miles) and population (about 16000 people). The City is known for its urban village community quality customer service nationally ranked school system environmental activism and endless community activities. The City Clerks office serves as administrator for the City Council ensures public access to the work of Council and maintains and preserves official city documents.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the City Clerks office at City Council meetings and assists the City Managers office at City Council Work Sessions.
  • Provides technical and administrative support for the City Council and advisory board meetings working closely with the IT and Cable TV Departments.
  • Runs presentations takes photos and assists the public and staff during City Council meetings including facilitation of participation by electronic means.
  • Produces social media and newsletter content to publicize the work of the City Council and boards and commissions.
  • Researches and advises on best practices and emerging technologies to aid public access to City meetings and records.
  • Assists with organization and processing of records and records requests.
  • Drafts minutes correspondence proclamations and other written communications.
  • Updates web content for the City Council City Clerks Office and boards and commissions.
  • Assists with organization of public events.
  • Updates Council events calendars.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in technology;
  • Two years of experience in office work preferably in public service;
  • Experience in audio/visual systems and web page management;
  • Experience in standard office practices procedures equipment and office assistance techniques including business English spelling and arithmetic;
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the public and other staff effectively to solve problems within scope of responsibility establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Flexible schedule and ability to adjust to unexpected challenges and pressures within the scope of responsibilities;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Hours: This is a fulltime position working 40 hours per week. Availability for Monday night City Council meetings (meetings held the Tuesday after a Monday holiday) some additional nighttime meetings and occasional weekend meetings is required. Daily work hours are flexible and may be worked partially remotely.

Salary and Benefits: This is a fulltime position with a hiring salary range of $50000 to $60000 annually depending on qualifications and experience.
