Summary

Get real world experience with us! Metros Mobility Division is seeking undergraduate interns to work within our Market Innovation and Customer Communication & Services sections. Metro Mobility has 4 undergraduate intern positions to fill. These positions are full or parttime for the Summer and/or the 2025/2026 School Year.

Who are we looking for Metro Mobility is looking for student interns that have graduated high school and/ or are attending a secondary institution college or university. Intern candidates should be interested and excited to gain relevant experience from working for the states largest public transit agency. Candidates should be selfstarters interested in learning about public transit and working for a local government agency. Metros Mobility division is dedicated to improving mobility options planning for and offering access to public transit within King County.

This recruitment may be used to generate a pool for future positions. The pool would be valid for twelve months upon creation and may be extended at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Job Duties

Position 1: Innovative Mobility & Health Through Housing Intern

About the Market Innovation Section: Market Innovation expands the reach of public transportation by breaking barriers and developing new products and services.

The Innovative Mobility Team collaborates across Metro to develop and pilot innovative new business models transportation services and planning tools to expand customer access to jobs opportunities and community assets advance equity and sustainability and support Metros transition from a transit to a mobility agency.

The Health Through Housing Teamcoordinates mobility services to supportive housing sites that address financial and other barriers to transportation with the goal of improving mobility and wellbeing.


JOB DUTIES:

  • Support major initiatives of the Innovative Mobility team including Integrated Services Planning Transit Go Rewards implementation for major events and the Health Through Housing Program.
  • Assist with data collection analysis report and presentation development for internal and external stakeholder to guide strategic decision making.
  • Engage with consultants and housing staff to identify persistent barriers and develop recommendations for continued program improvements.
  • Coordination of onsite events to promote enrollment and engagement in mobility services.

THIS INTERNSHIP WOULD BEST MATCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE:

  • Professional or academic experience in social work human services behavioral/public health publicadministrationor a related field.
  • Familiarity or experience working with at risk communities including but not limited to people experiencing chronic homelessness.
  • Familiarity with research design and analysis and the ability to think critically about program evaluation.
  • Comfort in working with individuals that may be experiencing mental health challenges.



Position 2: Customer Information & Communications Intern

About the Customer Communications & Services Section: Metros Customer Communications & Services Section designs produces and manages customerfacing communications that appear on social media buses in print and online.

The Customer Information Technological Resources & Solutions Teamworks to produce digital communication resources to public transit riders for service disruptions manages social media Executive correspondence and several Metro systems and applications.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Data collection research & analysis supporting system maintenance upgrades & improvements from rider feedback.
  • Administrative tasks: SharePoint upkeep ticketing management documenting general processes.
  • Communications: Writing/reviewing general communication reports & notifications responding to rider feedback from social media.
  • Testing system updates or changes by participating in and/or coordinating with participants proofing/validating testing scheduling updates or system changes.

THIS INTERNSHIP WOULD BEST MATCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE:

  • Experience in customer service or stakeholder communication.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to write/speak for different target audiences.
  • Experience with data collecting data entry and general analysis and tools to share or visualize data.
  • Selfmotivated skills to communicate needs suggest improvements and work without constant supervision.
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities.


Position 3: Service Information Graphic Designer Intern

About the Customer Communications & Services Section: Metros Customer Communications & Services Sectiondesigns produces and manages customerfacing communications that appear on social media buses in print and online.

The Service Information Teamworks to design produce and distribute customer facing communications commonly seen on the bus at bus stops on printed materials/brochures signage and more.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Assistwith the creation of customerfacing transit information and communications.
  • Assist with the twiceannual service change by updating riderinformation materials (predominantly printed products) working closely with the design team.
  • Update and refine timetable route maps to ensure they align with King County Metros brand guidelines and streamline design processes.
  • Lead the redesign of the timetable brochure booklet under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Create and produce bus stop signs and other facility signage.
  • Develop a design accessibility guideline tailored for public transit use to be shared with the Service Information team.
  • Investigate and apply accessibility guidelines to printed products (including maps and timetable booklets) to ensure inclusivity.
  • Design presentation decks to pitch print product improvements to designers and nondesigners.
  • Other duties as assigned.

THIS INTERNSHIP WOULD BEST MATCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE:

  • Demonstrated fluency in key Adobe software: Illustrator InDesign Photoshop and Acrobat isrequired.
  • Assembled a portfolio showcasingtheir ability to use the software listed and how they applied them to a variety of projects. (Directions for uploading the portfolio for this position are in the how to apply section.
  • Familiarity with design for accessibility (especially for print) or have a willingness to learn and apply best practices.
  • Proactive skills toinitiatetasks and projects without constant supervision. This position is looking for an independent selfstarter who has the ability toidentifyneeds propose solutions and execute plans.
  • Graphic design skills. Applicants do not need to be pursuing a degree in graphic design or working as a graphic designer to apply. We welcome anyone with strong graphic design skills to apply.

Position 4: Transit Route Facilities

About the Transit Route Facilities Team: This team is responsible for the management of bus stops throughout the King County Metro System. The group oversees maintains and updates a network of approximately 7000 bus stops and manages a variety of bus stop improvement projects from initial planning to implementation.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Conduct field work.
  • Assess existing site conditions.
  • Make recommendations.
  • Collect data and conduct analysis.
  • Access asset databases.
  • Research how other transit agencies are prioritizing improvements.
  • Participate in project planning and project team meetings.
  • Help coordinate projects with jurisdictions King County residents and private companies.
  • Write and/or review memos reports and /or presentations.
  • Create concept plans for potential bus stop infrastructure projects.

THIS INTERNSHIP WOULD BEST MATCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE:

  • Interest in public transportation and serving the public.
  • Pursuit of a degree focused on urban planning urban design landscape architecture transportation planning engineering (civil or transportation) construction or related fields.
  • Strong communication and research skills.
  • The ability to collaborate in teams.
  • The commitment to work with and contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Experience in using ArcGIS or other mapping tools.
  • Experience working with construction plans.
  • Experience in the use of InDesign Adobe Illustrator and /or other visual design tools.
  • Experience using R or other programming languages.

The work associated with these job classifications will be performed through a combination of teleworking complemented with onsite work. The specific mix can be agreed between Intern and supervisor. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. This could include working onsite as needed where desk space and an internet connection is provided.

Interns must reside in Washington State during the period of this internship. Onsite work is most often completed via shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Unless accomplished via the provided ORCA card commuting to onsite work will be at the expense of the employee.
