MISSION

Summary

The Bishop High School Band Director will direct and manage the overall program of marching band and instrumental music for the school. The Band Director will supervise and coordinate the instrumental activities to support each participant in achieving a higher level of personal skill in gaining an enhanced appreciation for music and an increased level of selfesteem through rehearsals and performances. Reporting to the Director of Fine Arts the Band Director will plan activities to achieve district region and state recognition. A Band Director is responsible for the implementation of the goals of Catholic education as outlined in The Holy Sees Teaching on Catholic Schools (Archbishop Michael Miller):

Qualified candidates will be driven and inspired by the mission of Catholic schools to form young men and women in a high school setting who will be good citizens of the world loving God and neighbor and enriching society with the leaven of the gospel and who will also be good citizens of the world to come thus fulfilling their destiny to become saints (Miller p. 20.

Responsibilities Include:

Direct high school instrumental performers such as marching band orchestra concert band soloists and ensembles.

Establish performance requirements enforce academic requirements and verify each students eligibility to participate in band.

Provide for band participation at extracurricular events including but not limited to concerts football games pep rallies graduation events parades.

Accompany and supervise students; arrange for transportation lodging and meals for outoftown events.

Oversee band booster club and support band booster club activities.

Obtain and use evaluative findings to determine program effectiveness and recommend policies to improve program.

Complete all required reports records and documents in a timely manner.

Manage and oversee band budgets and expenditures based on documented program needs as instructed by the Director of Fine Arts.

Ensure that programs are costeffective and funds are managed wisely.

Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department while overseeing the process of cleaning repairing and storing all band equipment.

Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.

Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.

Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.

Establish and maintain open consistent and professional communication with parents students band staff and the Director of Fine Arts.

Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues students parents and community members.

Facilitate relationships between Bishop Fine Arts Programs and Future Friars as instructed by the Director of Fine Arts such as visiting partner schools within the Diocese of Dallas.

Serve as a positive role model for students and support the schools mission statement.

Participate as an active member of the Bishop community.

Provide instruction to students in the BL Band during the school year including the summer band camp 3 weeks prior to the start of school).

Attend all performances including football games concerts and competitions related to band.

Assist with supplemental music instruction for students in the band including small group instruction as needed.

Opportunity to teach additional courses such as: AP Music Theory Beginning Band Jazz Band and others.

May be asked to assist with other courses when necessary.

Actively support and embrace the house system by serving as a mentor or comentor.

Perform other duties as directed by the Director of Fine Arts or the Assistant Principal for Academics.

Working Conditions:

Frequent district and occasional statewide travel.

Prolonged and irregular hours.

Outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather.

Qualifications include:

Bachelors degree required; masters degree preferred.

12 college credit hours in Education.

3 years teaching and band directing experience; knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program.

Desire to be held accountable for student academic growth and academic results.

Knowledge of Pyware or other marching band software.

Commitment to being a supportive respectful and energetic colleague.

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior while maintaining a professional manner.
