Job Description
CAREER DESCRIPTION
- COMMUNICATIONS INSTALLERIn addition to performancebased merit increases this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates:
Effective June.00 increase
Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above based on position requirements and successful candidates qualifications subject to appropriate authorization.
THIS RECRUITMENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future vacancies in the the Orange County Sheriffs Department. This recruitment may be used to fill similar and/or lower level classifications throughout the County of Orange.

THE DIVISIONTheTechnology Division provides professional responsive public safety communications for all city and county law enforcement fire service paramedic lifeguard public works and local government operations in Orange County. We will provide the highest level of service in an efficient and courteous manner and will remain a leader and national model in all aspects of public safety communications systems and services.
The Technology Division manages the operation of the 800 MHz Countywide Coordinated Communications System (CCCS) for all local public safety agencies (law enforcement fire paramedic lifeguard) and for general government on a 24hour basis. Other services include design installation maintenance and programming of communications and electronic equipment (microwave equipment; 911 dispatch equipment; mobile and portable radios; surveillance alarm sound video and control systems) engineering and frequency management.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Communications Installer is responsible under direct supervision to install and remove electronic equipment from variety of locations including emergency vehicles but not limited to police cars police motorcycles fire trucks command vehicles; read and interpret technical manuals schematics and installation instructions; maintain work orders time sheets and log documentation; install and maintain surveillance sound and video systems; performs simple repair work on electronic equipment; assists in the installation and removal of communication equipment from fixed stations and offices; learns to use basic test equipment and does other work as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience installing cameras twoway radio communication equipment and public safety equipment is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have experience in operating a wide variety of motor vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation and must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County SheriffCoroner.
Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form interview with a background investigator fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions traffic violations drug use and credit problems employment history professional references and education verification (i.e. degree license or official transcripts. Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credentials Services (N.A.C.E.S..

License: Possession of a valid California Drivers License Class C or higher is required by date of appointment.
PHYSICAL MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to lift over 50 lbs. with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing over 25 lbs.; climb ladders scaffolding and poles crawl under vehicles and work in cramped spaces such as under automobile dash or in automobile trunk stoop bend or twist your back kneel squat and work with arms above shoulder level; identify and distinguish colors; operate power tools or other like machinery that are potentially hazardous. Some assignments may require the ability to climb and work from antennas that may exceed 100 feet.
Environmental Conditions: Must be willing and able to work in remote areas and in high security areas such as jails courthouses and dispatch centers.
RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Sheriff Human Resources screens all applications to identify the most qualified candidates for the position based on the skills required to meet the needs of the Department. After the initial screening the qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the competition.
Applications must emphasize all the areas in which the applicant has expertise and accomplishments in the specific competencies related to the position.
Oral Panel Interview (Weighted 100: Candidates will be interviewed and rated by a qualification appraisal panel of job knowledge experts. Each candidates rating will be based on responses to a series of structured questions designed to elicit the candidates qualifications for the job. Only the most successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list.
ELIGIBLE LIST
After all procedures have been completed Sheriff Human Resources will establish an eligible list of qualified candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
Based on the Departments needs the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
