Job Description

POSITION TITLE:Substitute Teacher

EXEMPTION STATUS:Exempt/Nonexempt depending on assignment

REPORTS TO:Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:As needed

Primary Purpose:

Substitute for absent teacher or other employee and perform the duties of the absent employee. Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the academic subject area(s) assigned and assist students in fulfilling their potential for intellectual emotional physical and social growth.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

Bachelors degree or college hours from an accredited college or university preferred

Valid Texas teaching certificate preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills

Desire to work with students of all ages and social and ethnic backgrounds

General knowledge of academic subjects curriculum and instruction

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Strong organizational communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies

  • Implement teachers lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the Districts curriculum program.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency board policy and administrative regulations.
  • Use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students in the classroom.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to present modified curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) as applicable.
  • Integrate technology into instruction to strengthen the teaching for learning process.

Student Growth and Development

  • Assist students in analyzing and improving study methods and habits.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned by the principal.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students physical social and emotional development.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the student code of conduct student handbook and campus procedures.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  • Compile maintain and file physical and computerized reports records and other documents as required.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents students principals and teachers as applicable.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with students colleagues parents and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the district and demonstrate behavior that is professional ethical and responsible as set out in the Texas Educator Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Keep informed of and comply with laws policies and procedures that pertain to the role of substitute.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and special events as assigned by the principal.

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard classroom equipment computer peripherals electronic devices telephone
  • Posture: Frequent standing/walking kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling twisting
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions keyboarding use of mouse wrist flexion/extension
  • Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance 3055 pounds with assistance and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance
  • Environment: Work outside and inside; exposure to contagious diseases
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress work with frequent interruptions
