The opportunity we have available

The Legislation Liaison Unit (LLU) performs a critical role facilitating the departments legislation program. The LLU is comprised of nonlawyers and provides specialist advice and procedural support to ensure legislative instruments and bills progress efficiently through Parliament and the Federal Executive Council (ExCo) in accordance with established process requirements outlined in the Legislation Handbook.

The LLU is structured in three specialist teams and successful candidates may be placed in any of the following:

  • Primary Legislation Team Leading the lodgement introduction and passage of bills through Parliament to ensure they meet the procedural requirements including liaising with policy teams central agencies and Parliament House.
  • Subordinate Legislation Team Leading the submission and/or lodgement of legislative instruments to ensure they meet the procedural requirements before being made including liaising with policy teams central agencies and the Federal Executive Counsel.
  • Legislation Program Governance Team Leading coordination highlevel project management and reporting on the progress of the departments legislative priorities.


As an EL1 Senior Liaison Officer you will lead a team within the LLU and work closely with senior stakeholders and policy areas to ensure legislative processes are followed. This role requires strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills and understanding of legislative and parliamentary processes.

What will you do

Depending on placement as an EL1 Senior Liaison Officer you will be responsible for:

  • Leading a small team within the LLU to manage legislative processes in either the preparation of bills subordinate legislation or program governance.
  • Providing procedural advice to policy areas senior executives and ministerial offices on legislative requirements and parliamentary processes.
  • Coordinating and reviewing legislative submissions to ensure compliance with procedural and Government requirements.
  • Managing stakeholder relationships including liaising with central agencies such as the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet the Office of Parliamentary Counsel and the Australian Parliament House.
  • Tracking and reporting on legislative workflows ensuring deadlines are met and processes are followed.
  • Driving process improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of legislative coordination within the department.
