Job Description

Bayswater College London is seeking to appoint an adjunct professor for a level three course in Anatomy of Contemporary Britain for the fall semester starting week 1st September 2025 and concluding on 19th December with a study break on 2024 October 2025. The course will be delivered to US study abroad students in London.

This course offers an indepth exploration of modern British society politics culture and economy. Providing a comprehensive understanding of the forces shaping todays Britain. Key topics include the British political system social issues cultural diversity economic trends and the impact of Brexit. Well also delve into contemporary British literature media and the role of the monarchy. This course will broaden the students perspective and deepen their appreciation of Britains unique place in the world.

The learning outcomes are as follows:

  • Explore Cultural Diversity in Modern Britain: Students will gain a deep understanding of the diverse cultural landscape of contemporary Britain including the various ethnic religious and social groups that contribute to its rich cultural tapestry.
  • Analyse contemporary British Literature and Media: Students will be able to critically examine modern British literature and media understanding how they reflect and shape societal values cultural norms and public opinion.
  • Evaluate Economic and Cultural Trends in Modern UK: Students will assess current economic trends and their interplay with cultural developments in modern Britain understanding how these factors influence various sectors and the overall societal landscape.

Successful candidates must be experienced and effective teachers able to cater to a diverse student body and engage students in the subject matter so that they are fully prepared for their academic and professional journeys. Teaching is delivered in weekly threehour blocks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching Contemporary Britain.
  • Preparation of teaching materials for the course.
  • Providing updated syllabus and course pack/reader details by the required deadline.
  • Offering academic advising either facetoface or via email.
  • Arranging/accompanying students on cocurricular trips and inviting guest speakers where appropriate.
  • Setting and administering examinations and assessments including exam question design invigilation and grading as required.
  • Attendance at academic staff meetings (up to two per semester).

Requirements:

Required:

  • Masters degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field (Communication Media Studies International Relations or related).
  • Relevant teaching experience in higher education and proven teaching effectiveness.
  • Excellent communication skills and responsiveness to students and administration.

Desirable:

  • PhD in a relevant field (or nearing completion).
  • Previous experience teaching within US higher education.
  • Research experience publications and interests in intercultural communication or global media.

Person Specification
