Job Description

Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience
Minimum of 510 years of progressively responsible nursing management experience at the Director/AVP level
Masters degree required Doctoral degree preferred

Education:

Current licensure to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Master of Science Degree in Nursing required. Doctoral degree preferred.

Experience:

Minimum ten years with progressive clinical and administrative nursing experience.
Minimum five years nursing management position at Director/AVP level.

General Overview:

The Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer (NSMC) reports to the President and CEO. She/he directs all activities of the North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) related to the assessment planning provision and evaluation of patient care through the functions of the department directors of the PCS Division. Areas of responsibility include: Nursing Pharmacy Respiratory Therapy Pastoral Care Services and the Learning Resource Center. Responsible for: assuring that competent compassionate patient care is uniformly provided to patients in ambulatory inpatient and community settings; directing and developing the organization of departments for which responsible; leading the management team toward attainment of shortand longterm goals and objectives; executing strategies and plans designed to achieve those objectives and collaborating with other Hospital executives to meet Institutional goals and objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Organizational/Leadership

1.Directs the process for formulating the Patient Care Services Divisions philosophy vision and strategic plan.
2.Communicates and operationalizes the mission and strategic plan of the North Shore Medical Center and the PCS Division.
3.Recruits retains and develops a strong Nursing Pharmacy and allied health care services leadership team.
4.Establishes and maintains an environment conducive to quality and excellence in patient care.
5.Establishes and maintains an environment that is supportive of professional nursing practice.
6.Promotes multidisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration.
7.Identifies encourages and provides mechanisms for participation of the nursing staff in collaborative governance.
8.Ensures that the health care environment addresses the needs of a diverse patient population and workforce.

9.Provides input into development and implementation of information systems needed to support patient care.
10.Engages in professional development activities.
11.Promotes and participates in research activities and studies.
12.Participates as member of the hospital administrative management group the governing body medical staff and various clinical areas and committees in order to provide input into the development of the hospitalwide strategic planning process goals plans objectives operating policies and cost effectiveness initiatives.
13.Develops and maintains a leadership position in patient carerelated associations and organizations outside of NSMC in order to represent the interests of NSMC and improve the provision of healthcare services.
14.Collaborates with the SVP of Human Resources to direct negotiate and respond to labor/management activities in accordance wit6h the requisite collective bargaining unit agreements.
15.Develops and implements plans and programs designed to improve the communitys awareness and use of hospital services and improve the health of the population within the areas served by the hospital.
16.Engages in a variety of professional development and educational activities designed to help promote and manage the department and the institution and maintain stateoftheart knowledge of developments in healthcare delivery management theory legislation and nursing.
17.Provides direction and leadership to the establishment of the institutional structure standards for nursing practice.

Operations

1.Directs the development and implementation of standards policies and programs to ensure excellence in Patient Care Services.
2.Develops collaborative relationships with the medical staff/leadership and senior hospital administration and the governance board to advance the strategic goals of the PCS Division.
3.Communicates the role of patient care services and pertinent patient care issues to the organization and community.
4.Designs and directs the implementation of programs and processes to support organizational mission and goals.
5.Responsible in collaboration with Associate Chief Nurse Chief Pharmacist and allied health department directors to provide a safe environment for patient care staff and visitors.

Compliance

1.Assures care and unit functions are in compliance with applicable local state and federal regulations and accrediting agencies.
2.Develops and ensures compliance with the regulatory boards for Nursing Pharmacy and allied health services to meet all standards of patient care.
3.Supports a system that encourages the identification and analysis of errors and near misses in the context of a blame free culture.
4.Promotes an environment where employees are alert to opportunities for the enhancement of patient care through utilization and the latest research findings systems analysis and performance improvement principles.
5.Initiates multidisciplinary and interdepartmental forums to insure the promotion and protection of patient/family rights.

Fiscal

1.Participates in establishing financial plans integrating the institutions mission and goals.
2.Collaborates with Associate Chief Nurse and all PCS Directors of the Division in finance planning and in setting priorities for allocation of resources.
3.Advocates for resources necessary for patient care.
4.Establishes and maintains a cost effective patient care environment.
5.Communicates the PCS divisions contribution to the financial success of the organization.
6.Monitors budget compliance explains variance and implements appropriate actions to correct variance.

Customer Service

1.Develops supports and demonstrates a customer service based philosophy goals values and standards in alignment with those of the North Shore Medical Center.

2.Maintains the dignity and confidentiality of all patients while promoting autonomy and individuality. Demonstrates knowledge of and respect for diverse ethnic spiritual cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

3.Understands and integrates service excellence standards at all times. Serves as a role model. Recognizes these attributes in others and celebrates their achievements.

4.Engages in activities that promote mutual cooperation and supportive collegial relationships.

Safety and Infection Control

1.Follows hospital policy and procedures regarding patient and staff safety maintains a safe environment.

2.Incorporates infection control standards in daily activities.


Human Resource Policies

1.Adheres to standards established for attendance and is punctual.

2.Wears employee name badge/picture identification.

3.Adheres to all Human Resources policies of NSMC.
