Working under general direction of the Administrative Manager the incumbent is responsible for screening patients assisting with oral surgical procedures providing preand postoperative instruction to patients assisting with the coordination of dental assistant internship programs witnessing medication returns and waste being done by authorized personnel participating in data collection for occasional research projects and assisting with anesthesia during surgery. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares patient for treatment; screens to determine nature of problem and identifies/reports to physician or manager existing medical conditions which may be problematic during surgery. Conducts oral exam and takes vital signs making appropriate notations in patient record and verbally reporting findings to physician. The surgical assistant as assigned by the Administrative Manager ensures all rooms are properly stocked with instruments forms etc.Takes impressions bite registrations and fabricates models for preoperative Orthognathic and trauma patients; prepares patient for procedures; cleans sterilizes and sets up operating room.Using established written guidelines provides pre and postoperative information to patients being admitted to Surgical Day Care Unit. (i.e. postextraction instruction care of wire jaw nutritional guidelines for fracture and orthognathic patients).Assists Oral Surgical staff with procedures and patients under local nitrous oxide I.V. valium and deep sedation and general anesthesia; under direct supervision of surgeon performs extra and intraoral procedures (i.e. suture removal dressing changes irrigations changing elastics).Act as a witness to authorized personnel returning medications to Omni Cell and authorized personnel wasting unused medications.Exposes and develops xrays; ensures that xrays are of adequate diagnostic quality duplicate xrays as needed.Performs selected clerical tasks as needed and all other task as assigned by the physicians and the Administrative Manager. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of High School degree as well as: 1. Graduate of an accredited school for Dental Assistants. 2. Certified as a Dental Assistant by the American Dental Assistants Association or as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Assistant by the Dental Assisting National Board. Certification includes radiology and infection control standards. Must obtain 12 CEUs per year for recertification. 3. Certification of completion of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Office Anesthesia Assistants Program of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons within the first 12 months of employment.
