Job Description

Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Director of Special Education the School Psychologist provides comprehensive psychological services to students in grades PK12.

Essential Functions

  • Psychological Evaluations: Conduct comprehensive psychological evaluations including assessments of intellectual developmental academic social/emotional and behavioral status. Serve as a member of the Eligibility Team to present assessment results and determine eligibility for special education. Interpret and utilize assessment data to write psychological reports. Develop written intervention plans based on assessment data.
  • Counseling: Provide individual and group counseling to students as indicated in their IEPs. Assist students in addressing academic behavioral and emotional challenges.
  • Consultation & Collaboration: Collaborate with school administration instructional staff and parents to address individual student needs using functional behavior assessments (FBA). Serve as a resource for teachers and parents regarding students social emotional and academic needs. Participate as a member of the Child Study Team at the elementary intermediate and high school levels as needed. Attend IEP team meetings as required. Mentor Behavioral Interventionists and provide guidance in addressing behavioral issues.
  • Crisis Intervention & Threat Assessments: Provide crisis intervention during critical incidents and assist in conducting threat assessments.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of psychological theories test theory diagnostic categories learning disabilities and behavioral management techniques.
  • Knowledge of local state and federal policies governing special education and the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association and the National Association of School Psychologists.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong time management and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with students parents teachers administrators and colleagues.
  • Proficient in using MCPS computers servers switches scanners and printers for assessment scoring and reporting purposes.

Educational Requirements and Certifications

  • Education/Certification: Must hold or be eligible for a valid Pupil Personnel Services license with an endorsement in School Psychology OR currently hold a valid certificate issued by the National School Psychology Certification Board.
  • Experience: Experience with administering and interpreting a variety of psychological and educational assessments is preferred.

Travel Requirements: Travel to school district locations to complete evaluations/assist administration and teachers with students needs.
