SHAWCO is a studentrun volunteer society and a standalone Nonprofit Organisation (NPO). This duality allows SHAWCO Education the unique opportunity to engage in a variety of projects and programmes. The overall goal for SHAWCO Education is to help support students (high school and university) in as many ways as possible.
The President is the head coordinator of the Education sector and is accountable for determining the sectors strategic goals and ensuring its implementation alongside SHAWCOs management complement. This includes guiding the Executive and Senior Leadership (SL) in the daytoday operations of their project(s) executive oversight for board accountability management and administration financial oversight and risk management. Through the Presidents discretion the responsibilities of the education sector areas of mental health computer literacy and law initiatives will be split amongst the Executive.
SHAWCOs Projects
Below is a list of current and potential projects SHAWCO will engage in.
- Mental Health Workshops for students and volunteers
- Matric support Initiative (MSI) which is SHAWCO provided support for Matric students. For example mentor and mentee programmes
- SHAWCO Digital Literacy SHAWCOs programme to help improve the computer literacy levels of students
- SHAWCO Reading Programme a short project run in Hout Bay to help students enjoy reading
- SHAWCO Bank a longterm drive to ensure volunteers (UCT Students) receive the full benefits of being a SHAWCO volunteer
As a member of the Executive the President:
- Designs and oversees the implementation of the strategic plan
- Provides leadership and planning in the areas of curriculum teaching and learning holistic learning and community development
- Oversees the effective management of the sectors operations administration planning finances and human resources
- Optimises the overall quality of the participant experience
- Interacts with and manages key strategic relationships including but not limited to external partners local communities foundations and donors
- Performs various representative and ceremonial functions
- Represents the Education sector on the UCT Developmental Agency SubCommittee in conjunction with the SHAWCO Health president.
- Represent the Education sector as an executive member of the SHAWCO board of governance.

Requirements
- Be a registered UCT student in the academic year(s)
- Be committed to the cause vision and reputation of the Education sector
- Have a demonstrated history of leadership experience
- Be in good academic standing
- Have the ability to represent the sector of SHAWCO Education and SHAWCO the organisation
- Have the ability to think critically and strategically considering various perspectives and factors simultaneously to solve problems
- Have the ability to work independently and under timepressure
- Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to cooperate in a team
- Have excellent communication and conflictmanagement skills
Time Commitments
- Weekly Executive Committee of the SHAWCO board of governance (EXCO) meetings 2 hours)
- Weekly executive meetings 1 hour)
- Biweekly Senior Leadership meetings 2 hours)
- Flexible availability for other meetings with management at Head Office
- Flexible availability for consultation with the Senior Leadership 2 hours per week)
In total the role of SHAWCOs Education President will require a minimum time commitment of 10 hours per week) for daytoday operations.
Adding on the President will require a minimum time commitment of 8 hours per quarter) for quarterly engagements an exception where the Annual General Meeting is required.
