Respite care is designed to help families and caregivers take a break from the daily responsibility of caring for a person with a developmental disability. Respite services enable the caregiver to focus on their own health/well being increase care skills through training and this often prevents or delays more costly outofhome placements.
This program provides support for a male senior with limited verbal communication who receives 24hour support. He requires assistance with personal care including bathing toileting and daily living skills. He enjoys attending community events and activities especially those featuring older music. He has a particular interest in trains holidays and traveling to Edmonton and Calgary. Weekend Respite support should focus on helping him participate in family and social events that align with his interests and abilities.
The Disability Services Worker (DSW) under supervision of their supervisor facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical behavioural emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community family members guardians and employers. This position reports to the Team Leader.
Scheduling:
No guaranteed weekly hours/schedule. Position requires that the employee must be available to work a variety of shifts such as 1730 Friday through 0800 Monday. Once hired a Casual/On Call employee is contacted to provide respite and to cover staff illness LOA vacation etc. in this 24hr/7 program.
**ALLERGY ALERT: Client has a cat therefore staff should have no allergies and be comfortable around cats.
Support individuals with household chores life skills personal hygiene (if needed).
Provide supports as per the individuals care plan
Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use deescalation techniques to deal with behaviours
Administer medication first aid if/when necessary.
Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client

Candidate must be physically able to participate in recreation activities such as swimming walking basketball etc. to support personsserved desire to be physically active
Minimum Grade 12 or Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies Social Work Human Services Special Education Recreation or equivalent
A minimum of two 2 years working experience with persons with developmental disabilities is preferred.
MANDATORY A valid Class 5 Driver License with acceptable driving abstract and reliable vehicle
A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
Skills in assisting individuals in anger management daily living selfhelp etc.
ALSO helpful but will train if needed:
First Aid/CPR Certification
Crisis Prevention Intervention Medication Administration Abuse Protocol Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies Foundations and Disabilities Training
Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety as appropriate.
