SUMMARY

We are seeking a talented and motivated Cloud Engineer with handson experience in Amazon Web Services (AWS) to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of cloud infrastructure architecture and automation and be able to work collaboratively with crossfunctional teams to design implement and manage scalable secure and costefficient solutions in the AWS cloud environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design implement and manage scalable secure and costeffective solutions on AWS.
  • Develop and deploy infrastructure as code using tools such as AWS CloudFormation Terraform or similar.
  • Manage AWS services including EC2 S3 RDS Lambda VPC and IAM.
  • Optimize cloud performance reliability and costefficiency through proactive cost management.
  • Monitor and analyze AWS usage and spend identifying opportunities to reduce costs while maintaining performance and security.
  • Implement costsaving strategies such as rightsizing instances leveraging Reserved Instances and using AWS Spot Instances.
  • Assist in managing and tracking AWS budgets and forecasting cloud spend.
  • Develop cost allocation strategies using AWS Cost Explorer and AWS Budgets to allocate expenses across teams and projects.
  • Collaborate with development teams to create CI/CD pipelines for automated deployments.
  • Ensure high availability and disaster recovery plans are in place and tested.
  • Stay current with emerging AWS technologies best practices and industry trends particularly around cost management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience working with AWS services (EC2 S3 RDS Lambda VPC etc..
  • Strong knowledge of cloud architecture networking security best practices and AWS cost optimization strategies.
  • Experience with AWS cost management tools like AWS Cost Explorer AWS Budgets and AWS Trusted Advisor.
  • Expertise in rightsizing instances managing Reserved Instances and optimizing the use of Spot Instances to reduce AWS costs.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (e.g. AWS CloudFormation Terraform).
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker Kubernetes).
  • Handson experience with CI/CD pipeline tools (e.g. Jenkins GitLab AWS CodePipeline).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python Bash or similar.
  • Excellent problemsolving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect or other AWS certifications.
  • Experience with serverless architectures (AWS Lambda API Gateway).
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools.
  • Experience with automation tools such as Ansible for configuration management and deployment automation.
  • Familiarity with security frameworks and compliance standards (e.g. GDPR HIPAA).
  • Experience with other cloud platforms (e.g. Azure Google Cloud) is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science Information Technology Engineering or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Basic understanding of cloud computing concepts like elasticity scalability and cloud models (IaaS PaaS SaaS).
  • Handson experience with AWS services either through internships or personal cloud projects is highly valued.
  • AWS Core Services:
    • EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud): Setting up and managing virtual machines.
    • S3 (Simple Storage Service): Understanding storage solutions and best practices.
    • VPC (Virtual Private Cloud): Basic networking concepts such as subnets routing and security groups.
    • IAM (Identity and Access Management): Knowledge of user management and permissions.
    • Lambda RDS and other services: Familiarity with serverless architecture and managed databases is a plus.
  • Basic networking concepts like IP addresses DNS and VPNs.
  • Basic knowledge of navigating and performing tasks in a Linux environment.
  • Ability to write scripts in languages like Python Bash or PowerShell for automating cloud tasks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic cloudrelated issues.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills as you will be working in a team environment.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn: Cloud technologies evolve rapidly so a passion for continuous learning is essential.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The Citys Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
