Job Description
Learning Resource Teacher FullTime Ongoing
Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School is an Independent coeducational K12 school. We are one of a few dedicated Special Education Schools in BC serving students not only from the North Shore but drawing students from across the lower mainland. We follow the BC Ministry of Education curriculum while adapting and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. We incorporate Inquiry and Experiential Learning Universal Design for Learning and socialemotional education to deliver a comprehensive educational experience. Students in our high school program are working towards the Dogwood Graduation program and engage in successive experiences focussed on being ready to launch towards individualized pathways postgraduation.
Reporting to the Principal this is a fulltime continuing position with an initial focus on the High School (Grade 1012 with possible interdepartmental work expanding to the Junior (K6)and Middle (Grade 79
Qualifications:
- Canadian residency and be legally entitled to work in Canada
- A valid BC teaching certificate
- Experience education and training in special education preferably at the secondary school (Grade 812 level
- Knowledge of culturally responsive and traumainformed practices.
- Ability to contribute to the development implementation and evaluation of an IEP in consultation with the school team parents and caregivers students and community resource personnel
- Ability to carry out a variety of assessments including classroom observation curriculumbased assessment and diagnostic teaching methods administration and interpretation of normreferenced assessment instruments
- Proven experience in adapting materials for enrichment and meeting universal targeted and intensive supports to empower learners
- Knowledge of student regulation and management strategies
- Knowledge of safe caring and orderly school policies and Safer Schools Together training is an asset.
- Fluent communication skills in English both oral and written with students colleagues families caregivers and external service providers
- Strong organizational communication administrative and interpersonal skills
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Collaborative Planning and Coordination
- A member of the schoolbased team provides collaborative consultation
- Assists with prereferral interventions and works closely with teachers and the schoolbased team to plan for organize and access support services for students
- Student documentation and file review including psychoeducational and diagnostic reports.
- Instruction
- teaching students to develop learning strategies for use in classroom settings or for independent learning;
- Skill development or remediation
- Courses connected to socialemotional learning physical or mental wellness and career education development as directed by the Principal
- Consultation
- collaboration with classroom teachers to design or implement instructional strategies or to adapt instructional content or materials
- advising teachers concerning adjustments to curriculum instruction or environmental factors in the classroom which may facilitate learning for a student or group of students
- consulting with parents and students regarding learning strategies and organizational skills;
- consulting with school home and community resource providers.
- Assessment
- criterionreferenced or normreferenced assessment as appropriate to answer questions about how best to provide instruction or support
- systematic observation and collection of behavioural data to establish baseline/progress data or describe functional behaviours;
- Synthesis of information from parents student records other service providers and healthrelated information to aid the assessment process;
- Indepth interviews with students to determine their knowledge of the learning process and/or thinking strategies.
Salary and benefits are paid as per the BCGEU collective agreement. $53890.55 $107445.55 Depending on category and step
